Anthracite is a colour that lives between black and grey, named for the high-grade coal whose surface holds the same matte depth. Working a carpet to that tone takes a conservation-rooted method that the patchwork tradition has refined over the last twenty years. Vintage hand-knotted wool sections are pulled from rugs that have served their first lives, washed, sorted by density, and brought into a single bath of deep grey overdye that resolves a varied source palette into a coherent field. The After Dark Anthracite reading is the most architectural of the family.

This 9' x 12' (274 x 366 cm) carpet was assembled in India over around four months by a team of three finishers. Sections of antique and vintage hand-knotted wool were cut into rectangular patches, washed, overdyed to anthracite in a single bath to lock the field tone, and re-joined along their backs with hand sewing in cotton thread. The pile retains the original Persian or Anatolian knot of its source rugs; nothing in the body of the carpet is reproduction.

The composition

Anthracite carries the entire field, with the underlying floral, medallion, and geometric drawing of each vintage patch reading through the dye like a watermark. Grid lines between patches are honest and visible from close range; from across a room the rug reads as a single quiet ground in a room-organising mid-tone. The wool ages with use, polishing slightly where traffic concentrates and matting where it doesn't.

What you are buying

Patchwork carpets of this scale and quality, assembled from genuine vintage hand-knotted wool and overdyed by the same method, are sold through Western design galleries at the equivalent of nine to fifteen thousand US dollars. This is the same construction at a fraction of that pricing. Because the wool is already aged, the carpet has passed through the early-life shedding of a new rug and arrives stable for daily use.

The piece in a room

The 9' x 12' format suits a primary sitting area, a long dining table, or a home office that needs a single anchoring ground. Anthracite reads as architecture more than as decoration; it pairs with limewashed plaster, raw oak, brass, leather, and linen with equal calm and lets contemporary art and antique furniture share the room without conflict. Set the seating on the rug.

Conservation

Rotate a half turn each spring and autumn so traffic and sunlight age the rug evenly. Vacuum weekly, suction only, beater bar disengaged. Blot spills with a clean cotton cloth, never rub. Have a wool conservator hand wash the carpet every five to seven years and inspect the back seams at the same interval; minor re-stitching is normal maintenance for any patchwork piece.

Day-to-day care

  • Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
  • Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
  • Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
  • Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.

Deep cleaning

  • Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
  • Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
  • For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.

Storage

  • Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
  • Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
  • Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked

How long will shipping take?

Most metros (Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata) receive their order in 3-5 business days. Tier-2 cities take 5-7 business days, and remote pin codes (J&K, North-East, Andamans) take 7-10 business days. Use the pin-code checker above for a concrete delivery date.

Will the colour exactly match the photo?

Each carpet is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.

Can I get a sample before buying?

Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for ₹500 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp with the SKU and your shipping pin code to arrange a sample.

What is your returns process?

Returns are accepted within 7 days of delivery in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email care@rugsville.in or message us on WhatsApp with your order number — we arrange free reverse pickup in most pin codes. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.

Do you take custom orders?

Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted carpets typically take 4-8 weeks depending on size and complexity. Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.

Is Cash on Delivery (COD) available?

COD is available for most pin codes in zones A and B (metros and tier-2 cities). Some remote pin codes are prepaid only — the pin-code checker above will tell you immediately.
