Vintage Patchwork Modern Overdyed Hand Knotted Area Carpet-Anthracite 11064 8' x 10'

Anthracite is the colour of weathered slate and burnt charcoal, and as an overdye it sits at the harder end of the patchwork spectrum because it has to absorb every underlying tone evenly. When it works, the result is a graphic floor piece that reads almost monochrome at a distance and reveals its construction only when the eye is invited closer. This piece works.

Two artisans and a finisher carried the work over four months. Sections of older hand-knotted wool carpets were sourced, sheared down to a flat pile, washed, then lowered into an anthracite overdye bath for forty-eight hours at controlled temperature. The pieces were stitched together on a cotton backing and the pile evened by hand-shear after dyeing.

The composition

A field of anthracite that holds tonal depth because the wool beneath the dye is not uniform. Some patches read closer to graphite, some to soot, and the seams between them show as the faintest tonal break rather than a hard line. Overdye like this does not produce a flat colour; it produces a colour with a memory. The piece will gain a slight sheen over the first three years as the wool polishes under foot.

Avoid placing strongly patterned rugs in adjacent spaces; this one prefers to be the graphic centre.

Conservation

Suction vacuum every week. Rotate end to end each spring and autumn. Lift spills with a clean cotton cloth. A specialist hand-wash every five years removes the dust the vacuum cannot reach and replenishes lanolin. With this care the rug remains in service for sixty more years.
