Vintage Patchwork Modern Overdyed Hand Knotted Area Carpet-Anthracite 11064 6' x 9'

Anthracite is a difficult palette to assemble from reclaimed weaving because the source panels arrive in their own varied tones and the immersion bath has to bring them under a single dark grey discipline without flattening the variation entirely. The Anthracite patchwork in front of you was built around exactly that problem, panels of older village wool reassembled and lowered into a controlled grey-black bath.

The source panels were originally hand-knotted across the last several decades of village production. After cutting, washing, and shearing, the panels were hand-stitched into the new rectangle over six to eight weeks of work in India. The immersion overdye holds the field together at a single dark value while leaving the original geometries visible as a quieter under-layer.

The composition

A dark anthracite ground reads first, with the original village patterns surfacing in close greys and shadow tones. Panels meet at hand-stitched seams that are visible on close inspection and integrated at room scale. The pile direction shifts subtly across panels, which catches raking light differently in different quadrants. The colour will hold and the under-patterns will read more clearly with age.

European gallery pricing for comparable patchwork sits at four to eight thousand euros, and condition examples are increasingly difficult to source. This is a contemporary reclamation supplied substantially below those numbers. The rug acquires depth with use rather than losing it, which is the durable property of any hand-finished wool floor.

The piece in a room

6' x 9' (183 x 274 cm) anchors a primary seating area or a generous bedroom. The anthracite palette reads against limewashed white, against putty walls, and against pale linen, and pairs with walnut, brass, leather, and oxidised steel. The carpet expects to be the floor event in the room rather than competing with patterned upholstery.

Conservation

Vacuum weekly with the beater bar disengaged. Rotate end-to-end twice a year. Blot spills with absorbent cotton, never rub. A wool conservator should wash the rug every five to seven years. The piece expects a sixty-to-eighty-year service life on this regimen.
