Anthracite is the colour of polished coal in low light, a cooler register of black with a faint blue shift that holds depth rather than reading flat. The patchwork format developed in the early two-thousands as a response to the unreplaceable pile-age of antique wool, the slow oxidation that gives a fifty-year carpet its lustre. By cutting structurally unsound carpets into compatible registers and joining them on a fresh canvas, the workshops produced a single field that carries the chromatic history of a dozen earlier looms. The overdye unifies the surface so the seams read as faint architecture rather than as breaks.

The source carpets in this piece were selected for tonal coherence, then assembled by three artisans on a cotton scrim. The whole was hand-washed, sheared back to a uniform pile height, and immersed in a single bath whose final note carries the cool depth of anthracite. The dye work was done by hand under sun, which is why the surface holds the unevenness of plant pigment rather than the flat character of industrial colour. Each patch retains the wear pattern of its original use, which adds to the depth of the finished field.

The composition

A cool dark-grey field reading near to anthracite, broken into rectangles whose interiors hold the ghost of their original carpets; medallions, floral repeats, geometric borders, all reduced to under-pattern beneath the wash. The colour shifts from charcoal at the centre to a slightly cooler tone at the edges where the wash settles thinner. Across a room the field appears as a single dark plane. On close approach it opens into a many-handed history.

What you are buying

Single-source antique carpets in equivalent age and condition sell through London and continental dealers at four to seven lakh rupees, depending on attribution. The patchwork delivers the same fibre, the same pile age, the same vegetable-dyed lineage, distributed across a single coherent field. The carpet appreciates with use rather than depreciating. The overdye continues to develop for two to three years before settling into its final register.

The piece in a room

5' x 8' (152 x 244 cm) anchors a study, a primary bedroom, or a small sitting room arranged around a low table. The anthracite holds against bone-white plaster, against natural linen upholstery, and against unfinished oak. The cool ground accepts steel and brass equally and pairs naturally with mid-century walnut. A single graphic painting on the long wall completes the field.

Conservation

Rotate every six months. Vacuum on suction only, beater bar off, so the seams are not stressed by mechanical agitation. Blot spills downward with a clean cotton cloth rather than wiping across the pile. Engage a wool conservator every four years for hand cleaning by patchwork-trained hands. Under that regime the carpet runs forty to sixty years and continues to gain depth across the entire time.

Day-to-day care

  • Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
  • Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
  • Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
  • Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.

Deep cleaning

  • Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
  • Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
  • For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.

Storage

  • Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
  • Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
  • Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked

How long will shipping take?

Most metros (Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata) receive their order in 3-5 business days. Tier-2 cities take 5-7 business days, and remote pin codes (J&K, North-East, Andamans) take 7-10 business days. Use the pin-code checker above for a concrete delivery date.

Will the colour exactly match the photo?

Each carpet is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.

Can I get a sample before buying?

Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for ₹500 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp with the SKU and your shipping pin code to arrange a sample.

What is your returns process?

Returns are accepted within 7 days of delivery in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email care@rugsville.in or message us on WhatsApp with your order number — we arrange free reverse pickup in most pin codes. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.

Do you take custom orders?

Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted carpets typically take 4-8 weeks depending on size and complexity. Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.

Is Cash on Delivery (COD) available?

COD is available for most pin codes in zones A and B (metros and tier-2 cities). Some remote pin codes are prepaid only — the pin-code checker above will tell you immediately.
