Anthracite as a colourway sits between charcoal and graphite, cool enough to read as architectural and warm enough to hold its own against natural fibres and aged metal. The Anthracite overdye is what gives this patchwork carpet its register: where the After Dark variant pushes the pieced fragments toward saturated blue-black, the Anthracite bath holds the field in a measured grey-graphite that lets the residual drawing of the original carpets ghost through more legibly. The carpet reads as one composition rather than as a collection of fragments.

This 10' x 14' (305 x 427 cm) piece was assembled from fragments of older hand-knotted Turkish and Persian wool carpets, sorted by tone, overdyed in a controlled bath, and pieced together edge to edge by hand. Four artisans worked the cutting, dyeing, and binding sequence over roughly four months. The original knot work is hand-knotted wool on a cotton foundation, with the pile preserved through the bath. The final assembly was completed in India, in the workshop tradition that has built the modern patchwork category over the last twenty years.

The composition

A field of pieced wool fragments resolved into one cool register through the Anthracite overdye. The seams remain visible as graphic dividers across the field, while the older patterns of each fragment surface as residual drawing under the new colour. Secondary notes of slate, gunmetal, and faint rust emerge where the original pigment resisted the bath. The carpet sits in a cooler tonal range than most overdye work and is correspondingly more useful in contemporary interiors that lean architectural rather than warm.

What you are buying

Hand-knotted overdyed patchwork carpets of this scale, with original wool fragments and hand-bound assembly, price in the international interior trade between $5,000 and $11,000. The construction extends the working life of older carpets that would otherwise be unsalvageable, and the pile is built to outlast a generation of normal use. The piece appreciates with use as the overdye settles and the seams develop their own patina; this is not a carpet that depreciates the way a printed object does.

The piece in a room

10' x 14' (305 x 427 cm) is a generous living room or formal dining scale. The Anthracite register suits raw steel, blackened brass, walnut, and saturated wall colour, and pairs unexpectedly well with pale travertine and bleached oak floors. The grey-graphite ground is forgiving of mixed upholstery and reads as a considered ground rather than as a graphic centrepiece, which makes it useful in rooms that already carry strong visual content elsewhere.

Conservation

Rotate a half turn each spring and autumn so the pieced fragments and seams age evenly under traffic and light. Vacuum on suction once a week with the beater bar off; mechanical agitation works the hand-bound seams loose over time. Blot any spill with a clean cotton cloth, never rub. A wool-trained conservator should hand-wash the carpet every five years.

Day-to-day care

  • Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
  • Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
  • Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
  • Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.

Deep cleaning

  • Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
  • Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
  • For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.

Storage

  • Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
  • Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
  • Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked

How long will shipping take?

Most metros (Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata) receive their order in 3-5 business days. Tier-2 cities take 5-7 business days, and remote pin codes (J&K, North-East, Andamans) take 7-10 business days. Use the pin-code checker above for a concrete delivery date.

Will the colour exactly match the photo?

Each carpet is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.

Can I get a sample before buying?

Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for ₹500 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp with the SKU and your shipping pin code to arrange a sample.

What is your returns process?

Returns are accepted within 7 days of delivery in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email care@rugsville.in or message us on WhatsApp with your order number — we arrange free reverse pickup in most pin codes. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.

Do you take custom orders?

Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted carpets typically take 4-8 weeks depending on size and complexity. Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.

Is Cash on Delivery (COD) available?

COD is available for most pin codes in zones A and B (metros and tier-2 cities). Some remote pin codes are prepaid only — the pin-code checker above will tell you immediately.
