Patchwork carpets are a contemporary translation of an old conservation idea: take antique rugs that have lost coherence as single objects through wear, cut them into honest squares, dye them to a unifying tone, and re-stitch them into a single composition. The result keeps the hand-knotted pile of the original weavings alive and gives the field a graphic intelligence the source rugs never carried on their own. The After Dark version of this method works in deep, night-toned overdye colours that pull a varied source field into one quietly cohesive piece.

This 9' x 12' (274 x 366 cm) carpet was assembled in India by hand. Sections of vintage hand-knotted wool rug were selected for compatible thickness and density, washed, overdyed in a single bath of deep tone to harmonise the palette, and then hand-sewn together with cotton thread along the back to form a single continuous floor textile. Three weavers and finishers worked the assembly over around four months. The original knotted construction of each patch is preserved; nothing here is reproduction.

The composition

Deep overdye in midnight, dusk, and ink-dark tones carries the field, with the underlying floral and geometric drawing of each source patch reading through the colour wash like figures behind frosted glass. The grid of patches is irregular by design; the eye moves across the composition rather than landing on a centre. Saturated overdye gives the rug its contemporary mood while the hand-knotted wool body gives it the weight of an antique.

The piece in a room

9' x 12' anchors a principal sitting room or a long dining area. The dark overdye field grounds rooms with light walls and pale upholstery, and reads as quiet architecture in rooms with darker palettes. The patchwork composition pairs with both contemporary and antique furniture without taking sides between them. Set the seating on the rug rather than around it.

Conservation

Rotate a half turn each spring and autumn. Vacuum weekly with suction only and the beater bar disengaged. Blot spills immediately with a clean cotton cloth, never rub. Have a wool conservator hand wash the rug every five to seven years. The seams along the back may be inspected and re-stitched at the same interval if needed; this is normal maintenance for a patchwork piece.
