Patchwork as a carpet idea began with antique Anatolian and Persian rugs that had aged past full restoration. Rather than discard the surviving sections, dealers and weavers in the late twentieth century began assembling the strongest panels into single fields, often over-dyeing the lot in one bath to bring the disparate palettes into a unified tone. The result was a new object that carried the patina of every contributing piece. The rug in front of you continues that idea as a single hand-knotted weaving rather than a literal cut and pieced assembly.
The carpet was woven in India over roughly six months by three weavers sharing a vertical loom. Hand-spun wool on a cotton warp and weft, tied row by row in the Persian asymmetric knot. The cartoon was drawn as a grid of distinct panels each carrying a different antique pattern fragment, then unified by a single deep over-dye that pulled the field together into the after-dark palette. The dye sequence used indigo, walnut hull, and a touch of madder to build the deep, slightly violet ground.
The composition
The field reads as a grid of small antique fragments, each in a different drawing, all pulled together by an over-dye that settles into deep indigo-violet tones. Look closely and the panels separate into distinct motifs, geometric, floral, medallion fragments. Step back and they read as a single composed field with the slight tonal abrash of a real over-dyed antique. The piece will continue to deepen and unify as the indigo matures with light.
What you are buying
Genuine cut and pieced antique patchwork carpets in this scale, assembled from period Anatolian or Persian fragments, sell at European auction in the $15,000 to $35,000 range. The piece in front of you is a single woven object in hand-spun wool that draws on the same compositional idea without depending on the survival of antique source material. It appreciates with use; that is the underlying property that justifies the labour.
The piece in a room
8' x 10' (244 x 305 cm) anchors a contemporary living room or a primary bedroom with cleanly modern furniture. The over-dyed field reads as a single tone from across the room and reveals the panel structure on close approach, which makes it work in spaces where you sit close to the floor. Pairs naturally with mid-century walnut, with leather, with brass, and with bleached oak floors.
Conservation
Rotate a half turn each spring and autumn so the surface ages evenly. Vacuum weekly with suction only and the beater bar disengaged. Blot spills with a clean cotton cloth, working from the edge inward. A hand wash by a wool-trained conservator every five years keeps the cotton foundation supple and the over-dye true. With this care, the rug runs eighty years.

Day-to-day care
- Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
- Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
- Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
- Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.
Deep cleaning
- Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
- Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
- For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.
Storage
- Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
- Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
- Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked
How long will shipping take?
Most metros (Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata) receive their order in 3-5 business days. Tier-2 cities take 5-7 business days, and remote pin codes (J&K, North-East, Andamans) take 7-10 business days. Use the pin-code checker above for a concrete delivery date.
Will the colour exactly match the photo?
Each carpet is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.
Can I get a sample before buying?
Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for ₹500 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp with the SKU and your shipping pin code to arrange a sample.
What is your returns process?
Returns are accepted within 7 days of delivery in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email care@rugsville.in or message us on WhatsApp with your order number — we arrange free reverse pickup in most pin codes. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.
Do you take custom orders?
Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted carpets typically take 4-8 weeks depending on size and complexity. Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.
Is Cash on Delivery (COD) available?
COD is available for most pin codes in zones A and B (metros and tier-2 cities). Some remote pin codes are prepaid only — the pin-code checker above will tell you immediately.
