Patchwork carpet is a particular kind of artisan reclamation. Original village carpets from the last century, often Turkish and Persian, are sourced for their fibre and their weave rather than for their condition, then cut into rectangles, washed, sheared down, and reassembled into a single new field. The base panels were originally hand-knotted by village weavers across decades of production. Cutting, washing, shearing, and re-stitching into the new format took an additional six to eight weeks of careful work in India. After reassembly the field was lowered into an immersion bath of dark blue and grey-black, which unifies the differing pile heights and colours of the source panels into one composed surface.

The composition

The dark field carries faint ghosts of the original village patterns, geometric medallions in some panels, floral repeats in others. The whole reads first as a single midnight ground and only on close approach as a collage of histories. The pile shifts between panels in subtle direction, which is part of the aesthetic point. The colour will deepen with light and the under-patterns will become more legible over time.
