A patchwork at this scale is its own genre, neither restoration nor pastiche but a third thing that emerged from the workshops working with antique stock in the early twenty-first century. The premise is simple. Hand-knotted carpets that have lost their structural foundation but kept their colour are cut into rectangular registers, joined by hand on a fresh canvas, and the whole field is washed and overdyed in a single immersion bath so that the seams disappear into a unified plane. Each fragment is from a different original weaving, which means no two patchwork carpets in the world repeat.
Three weavers across multiple original looms produced the source carpets, none of them younger than fifty years. The patches were chosen for tonal compatibility before assembly. After joining on a cotton scrim, the carpet was hand-washed, sheared back, and immersed in a deep bath that reads as an after-dark tone of indigo with a violet shift. The bath happened by hand under sun rather than under heat, which is why the colour holds a slight unevenness rather than a flat industrial saturation.
The composition
A grid of dark-toned rectangles, each one carrying the ghost of its original pattern; floral repeats, geometric medallions, palmette borders, all reduced to chromatic substrate beneath the after-dark wash. The seams between fragments read as faint architecture rather than as breaks. The eye moves across the field finding individual histories that resolve only on close approach. From across a room the carpet reads as a single dark plane with a faint internal articulation.
What you are buying
Single-source antique carpets of comparable age and condition trade in the four-to-eight lakh rupee range when the original ground has held. A patchwork carries the same pile age, the same fibre, the same vegetable-dyed history, distributed across a field that no single antique example could provide. The carpet appreciates with use rather than depreciating. The overdye continues to settle for the first three years, deepening across the seams.
The piece in a room
5' x 8' (152 x 244 cm) is the working scale for a sitting area, a primary bedroom, or a study laid out around a desk. The dark wool ground holds against pale plaster walls, against polished concrete, and against the cooler tones of black-stained oak. The carpet works under a single graphic painting and pairs poorly with patterned upholstery, which would compete with the latent geometry of the field.
Conservation
Rotate twice a year. Vacuum on low suction with the beater bar disengaged so the seams are not stressed. Blot any spill straight down with a clean cotton cloth. Engage a conservator familiar with patchwork construction every four years for hand cleaning, since the joining canvas requires gentler handling than a single-piece weaving. Under those terms the carpet runs decades and continues to develop chromatic depth for most of that time.

Day-to-day care
- Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
- Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
- Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
- Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.
Deep cleaning
- Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
- Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
- For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.
Storage
- Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
- Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
- Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked
How long will shipping take?
Most metros (Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata) receive their order in 3-5 business days. Tier-2 cities take 5-7 business days, and remote pin codes (J&K, North-East, Andamans) take 7-10 business days. Use the pin-code checker above for a concrete delivery date.
Will the colour exactly match the photo?
Each carpet is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.
Can I get a sample before buying?
Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for ₹500 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp with the SKU and your shipping pin code to arrange a sample.
What is your returns process?
Returns are accepted within 7 days of delivery in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email care@rugsville.in or message us on WhatsApp with your order number — we arrange free reverse pickup in most pin codes. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.
Do you take custom orders?
Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted carpets typically take 4-8 weeks depending on size and complexity. Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.
Is Cash on Delivery (COD) available?
COD is available for most pin codes in zones A and B (metros and tier-2 cities). Some remote pin codes are prepaid only — the pin-code checker above will tell you immediately.
