Patchwork rugs are a contemporary tradition built on top of an antique one. Weavers cut down older Turkish and Persian carpets that no longer hold together as single pieces, sort the surviving fragments by tone, overdye them in a controlled bath to bring the colour into one register, and re-piece the result by hand into a new field. The After Dark colourway pulls the pieced fragments into a deep saturated bath that resolves the patchwork as a single dark composition rather than as a quilt.
This 10' x 14' (305 x 427 cm) carpet draws on fragments of hand-knotted wool carpets that were originally woven in the last century, then re-handled by four artisans over roughly four months: cutting, sorting, overdyeing, and stitching the fragments edge to edge with a hand-bound seam. The original knot work is hand-knotted wool on a cotton foundation, with the original pile preserved through the overdye bath. The final assembly was completed in India, in the workshop tradition that has built the patchwork category over the last twenty years.
The composition
A field of pieced fragments resolved into one deep tonal register through controlled overdyeing. The patchwork seams remain visible as a graphic element, dividing the field into irregular blocks, while the underlying drawing of each fragment ghosts through the overdye as residual pattern. The After Dark register is dominated by deep blue-black, with secondary notes of plum and oxblood emerging where the original carpet pigment resisted the bath. The piece reads as one composition rather than as a collection of remnants.
What you are buying
Authentic overdyed patchwork carpets of this scale, with hand-knotted wool fragments and hand-bound assembly, trade in the European and American interior trade between $5,000 and $11,000. The construction means the piece carries forward older woven labour rather than starting from scratch, and the pile is built to outlast a generation of use. The carpet appreciates with use as the overdye settles further and the seams develop their own patina.
The piece in a room
10' x 14' (305 x 427 cm) anchors a primary living area or a generously proportioned dining room. The After Dark register suits walnut, leather, brushed steel, blackened brass, and saturated wall colour; it sits comfortably under contemporary upholstery and modern art. Avoid pairing it with another strongly patterned floor or wall object in the same line of sight; the patchwork carries enough visual incident on its own.
Conservation
Rotate a half turn each spring and autumn so light and traffic age the seams and fragments evenly. Vacuum weekly on suction, beater bar off; the seams are hand-bound and a beater bar will work loose at the joins over time. Blot any spill with a clean cotton cloth, never rub. A wool-trained conservator should hand-wash the carpet every five years.

Day-to-day care
- Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
- Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
- Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
- Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.
Deep cleaning
- Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
- Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
- For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.
Storage
- Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
- Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
- Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked
How long will shipping take?
Most metros (Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata) receive their order in 3-5 business days. Tier-2 cities take 5-7 business days, and remote pin codes (J&K, North-East, Andamans) take 7-10 business days. Use the pin-code checker above for a concrete delivery date.
Will the colour exactly match the photo?
Each carpet is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.
Can I get a sample before buying?
Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for ₹500 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp with the SKU and your shipping pin code to arrange a sample.
What is your returns process?
Returns are accepted within 7 days of delivery in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email care@rugsville.in or message us on WhatsApp with your order number — we arrange free reverse pickup in most pin codes. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.
Do you take custom orders?
Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted carpets typically take 4-8 weeks depending on size and complexity. Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.
Is Cash on Delivery (COD) available?
COD is available for most pin codes in zones A and B (metros and tier-2 cities). Some remote pin codes are prepaid only — the pin-code checker above will tell you immediately.
