Zigzag is among the oldest patterns in textile history, recorded in pre-loom impressions on Neolithic clay and in the woven kilims of the Anatolian plateau before any classical motif was codified. A modern reading of the zigzag in a wool-and-silk Tibetan carpet trades the symmetry of the historical version for a slightly broken cadence, the way a contemporary jazz drummer pulls against a steady backbeat. The rust ground in this piece holds the geometry without competing with it, the silk lifting the pattern by a few millimetres of reflectance.

This 6' x 9' (183 x 274 cm) carpet was hand-knotted in India by two to three weavers over five and a half months. The pile is a blend of hand-spun wool and bombyx mulberry silk on a cotton foundation, tied with the Tibetan senna loop and cut to height. The wool was dyed in a single bath of madder root and walnut hull. The silk was dyed separately to a slightly cooler rust before being spun into the design lines, so that the chevron edges catch light differently from the field.

The composition

A rust field broken by ivory and graphite zigzags running diagonally edge to edge. The wool reads as a sustained warm earth tone, and the silk threads run through the chevrons like a thin metallic ink, picking up afternoon light and settling back into the field after sunset. The pattern reads as graphic up close and as a soft tonal field from across a room. The dyes will continue to age, the rust warming to terracotta, the silk holding its lustre.

What you are buying

Wool-and-silk Tibetan carpets at this scale are sold by European dealers at four to seven lakh rupees once shipping and gallery margin are added. The fibre blend, the senna technique, and the natural-mordant dye process are identical. This is a hand-knotted piece in a tradition that holds value reliably, and the silk content increases the resale ceiling against pure-wool comparables. The piece appreciates with use rather than depreciating.

The piece in a room

6' x 9' (183 x 274 cm) anchors a primary sitting area or fits cleanly under a six-seat dining table with foot clearance for chairs. The rust ground pairs with walnut, oak, raw cotton, brass, and antique terracotta tile. Avoid placing it against floors with strong red undertone; it wants a cooler ground to push against. Single graphic art reads well above it, particularly black and white photography or charcoal drawings.

Conservation

Rotate end-to-end annually. Vacuum weekly with suction only, beater bar disengaged, taking care over the silk lines, which prefer light passes. Blot promptly with a clean cotton cloth when something spills. A wool-and-silk specialist should hand-wash the piece every six years. The silk lustre will sharpen rather than dull with this regimen, and the carpet runs sixty to eighty years.

Day-to-day care

  • Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
  • Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
  • Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
  • Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.

Deep cleaning

  • Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
  • Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
  • For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.

Storage

  • Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
  • Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
  • Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked

How long will shipping take?

Most metros (Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata) receive their order in 3-5 business days. Tier-2 cities take 5-7 business days, and remote pin codes (J&K, North-East, Andamans) take 7-10 business days. Use the pin-code checker above for a concrete delivery date.

Will the colour exactly match the photo?

Each carpet is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.

Can I get a sample before buying?

Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for ₹500 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp with the SKU and your shipping pin code to arrange a sample.

What is your returns process?

Returns are accepted within 7 days of delivery in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email care@rugsville.in or message us on WhatsApp with your order number — we arrange free reverse pickup in most pin codes. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.

Do you take custom orders?

Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted carpets typically take 4-8 weeks depending on size and complexity. Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.

Is Cash on Delivery (COD) available?

COD is available for most pin codes in zones A and B (metros and tier-2 cities). Some remote pin codes are prepaid only — the pin-code checker above will tell you immediately.
