Knot density is the quiet metric that separates a hand-knotted carpet from the things that imitate it. Every knot is a single decision the weaver makes against the warp. Multiply that across the field and a rug becomes a record of attention rather than of manufacture. The pile in front of you carries that record across its full surface.

Knot density is the quiet metric that separates a hand-knotted carpet from the things that imitate it. Every knot is a single decision the weaver makes against the warp. Multiply that across the field and a rug becomes a record of attention rather than of manufacture. The pile in front of you carries that record across its full surface.

The carpet was put up on a vertical loom in northern India. 2 weavers shared the work over roughly 4 months, tying knots by feel against the warp without lifting the cartoon between rows. Around 0.6 million asymmetric knots in total, with wool pile on a cotton foundation. The grey register is built up across multiple dye lots so the eye reads variation rather than a single flat field, and the pile was clipped and washed by hand once the rug came off the loom.

The composition

Botanical drawing over a grey field that holds two values, one warm and one cool. Stems and blossoms drawn loosely enough to read as natural rather than as catalogue. The repeat is large enough to carry a long room without forcing the eye to count. What looks like a single colour at the door resolves into three or four close tones once you stand on the rug, which is the property that separates wool work from printed alternatives.

What you are buying

A democratic entry to hand-knotted wool work. The construction is real, the wool is real, and the rug will outlive most of the furniture it sits beneath. Treat it as a long-term piece rather than as seasonal decor.

The piece in a room

At 3' × 12' (91 × 366 cm) the rug suits a compact living area, a primary bedroom with a queen frame, or a dining nook seating four. The grey ground holds the floor without claiming ownership of the room, and the geometry resolves cleanly when sofa legs and side tables sit on top of it. Front legs of upholstery on the rug, rear legs off, is the arrangement that lets the field read at full strength. Pairs cleanly with walnut and oak floors, brass and blackened-steel fittings, leather upholstery, and linen drapery in a related register.

Conservation

Vacuum on suction only, weekly. Rotate the rug a half turn each spring and autumn to keep the wear even. Address spills by blotting outward from the centre. A professional hand wash every five years preserves the dye and protects the foundation. Stored properly, the carpet outlives its first owners.

Day-to-day care

  • Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
  • Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
  • Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
  • Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.

Deep cleaning

  • Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
  • Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
  • For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.

Storage

  • Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
  • Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
  • Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked

How long will shipping take?

Most metros (Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata) receive their order in 3-5 business days. Tier-2 cities take 5-7 business days, and remote pin codes (J&K, North-East, Andamans) take 7-10 business days. Use the pin-code checker above for a concrete delivery date.

Will the colour exactly match the photo?

Each carpet is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.

Can I get a sample before buying?

Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for ₹500 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp with the SKU and your shipping pin code to arrange a sample.

What is your returns process?

Returns are accepted within 7 days of delivery in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email care@rugsville.in or message us on WhatsApp with your order number — we arrange free reverse pickup in most pin codes. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.

Do you take custom orders?

Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted carpets typically take 4-8 weeks depending on size and complexity. Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.

Is Cash on Delivery (COD) available?

COD is available for most pin codes in zones A and B (metros and tier-2 cities). Some remote pin codes are prepaid only — the pin-code checker above will tell you immediately.

Have a question about this carpet?
