Rugsville Ziegler Traditional Gray Wool Carpet 8' x 10'

Grey is a relatively young colour in the Ziegler vocabulary. The original 1880s commercial commission worked in the natural palette of the Anatolian and Iranian highlands, all madder reds, walnut browns, indigo blues, and undyed creams; grey as a deliberate ground colour entered the tradition through twentieth-century interior design and was absorbed into the workshop palette over the past few decades. The 8' x 10' grey Ziegler piece described here adapts the classical drawing into a more architectural, more contemporary chromatic register.

The carpet was woven in India by three weavers across approximately five months. The pile is hand-spun wool tied through the asymmetric Persian knot to a cotton foundation at the open Ziegler density. The wool was dyed across three closely related grey lots before knotting, with the principal vine drawing in deeper graphite over a softer mid-grey ground. The finished piece was washed in plant soap, sun-cured for several weeks, and hand-sheared to bring the drawing into clear relief against the calm field. The whole was inspected and trimmed by hand.

The composition

A mid grey ground laid with a quiet, all-over scrolling vine pattern in deeper graphite and soft charcoal. The drawing repeats but the spacing is open, in keeping with the Ziegler discipline. The border is a single restrained guard band rather than a stack of competing repeats. The colour will settle further into the fibre over the next decade as use and light age the surface. Surface variation in the hand-spun wool keeps the grey alive under interior light at every angle.

Conservation

Hand wash by a wool-trained conservator every five to seven years. Avoid prolonged direct sunlight on any single strip. With this care the carpet runs into multiple generations of useful life.
