The Ziegler Traditional Brown sits within the softer rendering of classical Persian carpet design that a Manchester firm developed in the 1880s for the western drawing room market. Three weavers shared the upright loom in northern India for around six months. The foundation is cotton warp and weft, the pile is hand-spun wool, the knot a Persian asymmetric tied against the vertical beam row by row. Walnut hull carried the brown ground, oak gall deepened the border, madder root warmed the floral centres, and a small quantity of indigo balanced the warm register. Each dye lot was matured in copper for two to three weeks before the wool was lowered.

The composition

A traditional brown field carries an open floral vine in deeper walnut, soft rust, and ivory. The drawing is generous and the spacing measured, with negative space between motifs that lets the brown breathe. The border layers a wider walnut band between two thinner guards, framing the field with the kind of restraint that distinguishes serious Ziegler weaving from busier copies. Plant dye gives the field a slight abrash across the surface, the gentle tonal variation that distinguishes a hand woven carpet from a printed one.

Conservation

Rotate the carpet a half turn each spring and autumn so window light and footfall age the surface evenly. Vacuum weekly on suction only with the beater bar lifted. Blot any spill with a clean cotton cloth, working from outside the stain inward. Hand wash by a wool trained conservator every five to seven years. With these habits the piece runs a hundred years.
