Rugsville Ziegler Traditional Brown Wool Carpet 2'6" x 16'

The Ziegler all-over pattern grew out of court workshops where every drawing was approved by a master designer before a single knot was tied. The cartoon was scaled up onto graph paper, each square representing a single knot, and the weavers worked from that map across long winter months.

On this loom, 1 weaver shared the warp for 4 months. Roughly 1,036,800 hand-tied knots in New Zealand wool on a cotton foundation, the pile cropped to 9 mm. The wool was vegetable-dyed in small batches using madder, indigo, walnut hull, and pomegranate rind, each bath matured for two to three weeks before the yarn was lowered.

The composition

The palette runs through brown and walnut, with the field carrying most of the saturation and the border holding it in place. Plant dye does not sit flat on wool the way synthetic colour does. Each strand reads slightly differently against its neighbour, which is why the surface has the depth that synthetic dye can mimic but never match.

This is the entry point for serious hand-knotted work. The construction is the same as the higher-priced pieces in this catalogue. The economy comes from a slightly lower knot count and a more direct dye process, not from any compromise in the loom or the wool. A hand-knotted carpet of this kind is one of the few household objects that still gains value with use rather than losing it.

Conservation

Rotate a half turn each spring and autumn so light and footfall age the rug evenly. Vacuum weekly with the beater bar disengaged, suction only. Blot spills with a clean cotton cloth. Hand-wash by a wool-trained conservator every four to five years. With this care a hand-knotted piece of this construction runs eighty to a hundred years.
