By the late 1800s the workshops at Sultanabad in western Iran were producing the carpets that defined the Anglo-American drawing room, and a Swiss firm called Ziegler and Company had set up a buying office in Tabriz to commission softer, opener fields for export. The pattern in this Ziegler is a direct descendant of that lineage, holding the open botanical repeat that distinguishes Ziegler from the denser classical Persian designs and resolving it in a calm blue ground that sits well in contemporary interiors without losing the historical authority of the source.
Three to four weavers shared the loom for roughly five months. The pile is hand-knotted wool on a cotton foundation. The blue ground was built in a fermented indigo bath, lifted in stages so the colour oxidised cleanly. The corner-to-corner vine work uses madder and weld for the rust and ochre touches that animate the composition. Each skein dyes slightly differently, which is why the field carries the abrash variation antique Sultanabads are prized for.
The composition
A central medallion in faded ochre on a softly varied blue ground. Vine work in cream and rust runs corner to corner, broken only by a restrained guard border in deeper indigo. The composition reads as open and architectural rather than as densely floral. Over the next decade the blue will lighten in the most-walked areas, the rust will deepen, and the cream will warm into bone.
What you are buying
Antique Sultanabads with comparable colour and condition trade at Christie's and Sotheby's between $25,000 and $45,000 when they appear at all. This is a new weaving in the same tradition, on the same kind of loom, in the same fibre. The rug appreciates with use rather than depreciating, and the vegetable dyes continue to oxidise toward their final saturation across the first decade.
The piece in a room
9' x 12' (274 x 366 cm) is the canonical drawing-room scale. The blue ground holds a ten-seat dining table or a U-shaped sectional above it. Pairs with bone walls, brass lighting, oxblood and tan leather, and walnut floors. A single large abstract canvas in warm tones above the primary seating completes the composition.
Conservation
Rotate a half turn each spring and autumn. Weekly suction vacuum, beater bar off. Blot spills with cotton; never rub. Hand-wash by a wool-trained conservator every five years. With this care the rug runs eighty to a hundred years and outlives its first owners.

Day-to-day care
- Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
- Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
- Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
- Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.
Deep cleaning
- Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
- Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
- For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.
Storage
- Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
- Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
- Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked
How long will shipping take?
Most metros (Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata) receive their order in 3-5 business days. Tier-2 cities take 5-7 business days, and remote pin codes (J&K, North-East, Andamans) take 7-10 business days. Use the pin-code checker above for a concrete delivery date.
Will the colour exactly match the photo?
Each carpet is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.
Can I get a sample before buying?
Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for ₹500 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp with the SKU and your shipping pin code to arrange a sample.
What is your returns process?
Returns are accepted within 7 days of delivery in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email care@rugsville.in or message us on WhatsApp with your order number — we arrange free reverse pickup in most pin codes. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.
Do you take custom orders?
Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted carpets typically take 4-8 weeks depending on size and complexity. Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.
Is Cash on Delivery (COD) available?
COD is available for most pin codes in zones A and B (metros and tier-2 cities). Some remote pin codes are prepaid only — the pin-code checker above will tell you immediately.
