The traditional Ziegler beige sits between cream and tobacco, warmer than ivory and softer than tan. It was the most requested ground colour of the original Manchester commissions because it sat under both gilt and walnut without arguing with either. The rug in front of you holds that ground steady through a long all-over palmette repeat in soft umber and chalk, the way a Persian master weaver would have rendered the field for an English country house in 1895.

Four weavers shared the vertical loom for close to six months. New Zealand wool was hand-spun, plied for tensile life, and tied in Persian asymmetric knots against a cotton warp. Dye baths were prepared from walnut hull, pomegranate rind, madder root for the warm outlines, and a small amount of indigo for the deeper accent tones. After clipping, the rug was sun-dried for several days and washed in mineral solution to bring the saturation back to antique register.

The composition

A beige field worked over with palmette and vine in chalk, umber, and faint madder. The repeat is wide enough that the eye does not catch the seam. The border is a single guard band, narrow, in a slightly deeper register of the field colour, so it frames without competing. The wool carries faint horizontal abrash from the small-batch dye lots, the fingerprint of plant dye work that machine-finished rugs cannot imitate.

What you are buying

Antique Ziegler beige-ground carpets at 9' x 12' with comparable provenance reach forty to eighty-five thousand US dollars at international auction. This piece is woven on the same loom architecture, in the same Persian knot, in long-staple wool, with the same plant dye discipline. At one and a half lac it sits below the cost of a single antique armchair from the same era, and unlike the armchair it appreciates with use.

The piece in a room

9' x 12' (274 x 366 cm) anchors a primary drawing room with all four front legs of the seating landing on the wool. The beige holds against chalk plaster, panelled wood, and pale stone alike. The rug pairs with walnut casework, oxblood leather, brass detail, and a few large pieces of art rather than many small ones. The field rewards mid-tone walls.

Conservation

Half-turn the rug each spring and autumn. Vacuum weekly, suction only, beater bar disengaged. Blot spills with clean cotton at once. Hand-wash by a trained wool conservator at the six-year mark. With this care the piece runs eight to ten decades in regular use.

Day-to-day care

  • Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
  • Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
  • Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
  • Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.

Deep cleaning

  • Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
  • Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
  • For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.

Storage

  • Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
  • Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
  • Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked

How long will shipping take?

Most metros (Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata) receive their order in 3-5 business days. Tier-2 cities take 5-7 business days, and remote pin codes (J&K, North-East, Andamans) take 7-10 business days. Use the pin-code checker above for a concrete delivery date.

Will the colour exactly match the photo?

Each carpet is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.

Can I get a sample before buying?

Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for ₹500 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp with the SKU and your shipping pin code to arrange a sample.

What is your returns process?

Returns are accepted within 7 days of delivery in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email care@rugsville.in or message us on WhatsApp with your order number — we arrange free reverse pickup in most pin codes. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.

Do you take custom orders?

Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted carpets typically take 4-8 weeks depending on size and complexity. Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.

Is Cash on Delivery (COD) available?

COD is available for most pin codes in zones A and B (metros and tier-2 cities). Some remote pin codes are prepaid only — the pin-code checker above will tell you immediately.
