Of the major Persian-style design traditions, the Ziegler is the one most identified with restraint. The original commissions came from a German firm based in Manchester that wanted classical Persian work softened for the Anglo-American drawing room; the result was an open floral field with a single restrained border rather than the dense layered borders of the older Persian tradition. The Traditional Beige Ziegler is a quiet expression of that lineage.

Three weavers shared this 8' x 10' (244 x 305 cm) loom in India for around five months. The pile is hand-spun wool on a cotton foundation, knotted at the density that gives the floral drawing definition without making the rug heavy. The vegetable-mordanted dyes were prepared in copper vats over multiple weeks before the wool was lowered. After weaving the rug was sheared by hand and washed in a lustre bath.

The composition

A soft beige field carries an open floral repeat in muted rust, soft sage, and faint indigo, with a single restrained border in deeper beige and a guard band in deeper rust. The discipline is restraint; the vines breathe rather than crowding the field. Over the first decade the beige will warm into a softer bone, the rust will lighten toward terracotta, and the overall palette will gain the patina that distinguishes hand-dyed wool.

The beige and muted floral palette pairs with limewashed walls in cream or warm grey, with mid-tone walls in soft sage or terracotta, with walnut and oak floors. The Ziegler holds its character in rooms with strong art and in quieter rooms equally; the rug is the floor furniture, not the focal point of the room.

Conservation

Rotate a half turn each spring and autumn for even wear. Vacuum weekly with the beater bar disengaged. Blot spills immediately with a clean cotton cloth from the outside in. Hand-wash by a wool conservator every five to seven years. With this routine the rug runs eighty to a hundred years.
