Ziegler is the name of a design rather than a place. In 1883 a German firm based in Manchester set up a buying office in central Iran and commissioned local weavers to redraw the dense, formal floral patterns of the older Persian tradition into something more open, more airy, and easier to live with in a western drawing room. The result was a carpet style that has held its market for nearly a century and a half. This piece is a contemporary working of that Ziegler vocabulary, tied in beige tones the original commissions favoured.

The 10' x 14' (305 x 427 cm) field was tied by three to four weavers across roughly seven months. The pile is hand-spun wool, chosen for its long staple and its ability to take colour without losing the slight heather that gives older wool its patina. The foundation is cotton, warped on a vertical beam and tensioned by hand. Each knot was set by feel and combed down before the next row began. Pile depth runs eight to twelve millimetres.

The composition

A beige ground, layered rather than flat because hand-spun wool never dyes to a single value. Scrolling vines, palmettes, and small blossoms cross the field in soft rust, faded indigo, and old gold. The border is restrained, a single broad guard band in deeper colour. The traditional Ziegler pattern is built around openness rather than density. The motifs breathe and the eye can rest on undecorated ground between them.

What you are buying

Comparable contemporary Ziegler weavings of this scale and quality trade through Western dealers and the major auction houses in the range of three to six lakh when they carry workshop attribution. This piece is offered direct from the loom at a price well below that comparable. Hand-knotted wool on cotton appreciates with use rather than depreciating because the inputs are finite and the labour cannot be mechanised. The Ziegler vocabulary is also among the most consistently traded categories in the secondary market.

The piece in a room

10' x 14' (305 x 427 cm) is the working scale for a generous primary drawing room or a long dining setting. The beige ground is the most architecturally cooperative colour for a floor, which is why it pairs with almost any palette of walls, wood, or upholstery. The rug sits especially well with walnut, brushed brass, oak, oil painting, and either period furniture or restrained modern work. Mid-tone walls hold the colour best.

Conservation

Vacuum weekly with the beater bar disengaged and suction only. Rotate the rug a half turn at each change of season to balance light and traffic. Blot spills with a dry cotton cloth, never rub. Schedule a hand-wash by a wool-trained conservator every five years. With this care the piece runs eighty years and longer and gains the patina that older Ziegler carpets are prized for.

Day-to-day care

  • Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
  • Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
  • Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
  • Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.

Deep cleaning

  • Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
  • Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
  • For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.

Storage

  • Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
  • Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
  • Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked

How long will shipping take?

Most metros (Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata) receive their order in 3-5 business days. Tier-2 cities take 5-7 business days, and remote pin codes (J&K, North-East, Andamans) take 7-10 business days. Use the pin-code checker above for a concrete delivery date.

Will the colour exactly match the photo?

Each carpet is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.

Can I get a sample before buying?

Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for ₹500 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp with the SKU and your shipping pin code to arrange a sample.

What is your returns process?

Returns are accepted within 7 days of delivery in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email care@rugsville.in or message us on WhatsApp with your order number — we arrange free reverse pickup in most pin codes. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.

Do you take custom orders?

Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted carpets typically take 4-8 weeks depending on size and complexity. Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.

Is Cash on Delivery (COD) available?

COD is available for most pin codes in zones A and B (metros and tier-2 cities). Some remote pin codes are prepaid only — the pin-code checker above will tell you immediately.
