Tan and ivory together is one of the oldest colour relationships in the carpet vocabulary. The two values sit close enough on the spectrum that the pattern reads as drawing rather than as ornament, with the field carrying the surface and the vine work picking out form across it. The Ziegler tradition formalised this register in the 1880s for the western drawing room market, and the Tan and Ivory carries that lineage forward at canonical room scale.

Three weavers shared the upright loom in northern India for around six months. The foundation is cotton warp and weft, the pile is hand-spun wool, the knot a Persian asymmetric tied against the vertical beam row by row. Walnut hull carried the tan ground, the ivory is the natural undyed wool washed and lightly bleached only enough to even the colour, and a small quantity of indigo at the floral centres balances the otherwise warm palette. Each dye lot was matured in copper for several weeks before the wool was lowered.

The composition

A tan field holds an open floral vine in ivory and softer walnut, with a small touch of indigo picking out the floral centres. The border layers a single deeper tan band between two thinner ivory guards, framing the field with the restraint that distinguishes a serious Ziegler from a busier rendering. Plant dye gives the tan a slight abrash, the quiet tonal variation between dye lots that marks the carpet as hand woven. Over a decade of use the tan warms toward bone and the ivory deepens into cream, with the contrast softening into a more unified surface.

What you are buying

A Ziegler at 9' x 12' density and pattern discipline, sold through Western dealers or at international auction, sits between four and nine lakh equivalent. This new weaving carries the same fibre, dye lineage, and density at workshop pricing. The carpet appreciates with use rather than depreciating, the defining property of serious hand knotted wool and the reason these pieces remain in collections across generations rather than entering and leaving the resale market.

The piece in a room

9' x 12' (274 x 366 cm) anchors a long drawing room arranged around a sectional sofa and a low table, or a formal dining setting seating ten to twelve. The tan and ivory palette accepts almost any surrounding scheme. Chalk walls hold the warmth, deeper plaster pulls the tan forward, and oak or walnut joinery sit comfortably with the field. Brass, aged bronze, and undyed linen all read well above the surface.

Conservation

Rotate the carpet a half turn each spring and autumn so window light and footfall age the surface evenly. Vacuum weekly on suction only with the beater bar lifted. Blot any spill with a clean cotton cloth, working from outside the stain inward. Hand wash by a wool trained conservator every five to seven years. With these habits the piece runs eighty to a hundred years.

Day-to-day care

  • Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
  • Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
  • Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
  • Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.

Deep cleaning

  • Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
  • Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
  • For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.

Storage

  • Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
  • Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
  • Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked

How long will shipping take?

Most metros (Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata) receive their order in 3-5 business days. Tier-2 cities take 5-7 business days, and remote pin codes (J&K, North-East, Andamans) take 7-10 business days. Use the pin-code checker above for a concrete delivery date.

Will the colour exactly match the photo?

Each carpet is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.

Can I get a sample before buying?

Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for ₹500 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp with the SKU and your shipping pin code to arrange a sample.

What is your returns process?

Returns are accepted within 7 days of delivery in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email care@rugsville.in or message us on WhatsApp with your order number — we arrange free reverse pickup in most pin codes. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.

Do you take custom orders?

Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted carpets typically take 4-8 weeks depending on size and complexity. Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.

Is Cash on Delivery (COD) available?

COD is available for most pin codes in zones A and B (metros and tier-2 cities). Some remote pin codes are prepaid only — the pin-code checker above will tell you immediately.
