Rugsville Ziegler Tan & Ivory Hand Knotted Wool Carpet 8' x 10'

The Ziegler vocabulary was born in the late nineteenth century when a European trading firm set up a buying office in western Persia and began commissioning local weavers to soften the dense classical repeats into open, airy fields better suited to drawing rooms in London and New York. The tan-and-ivory palette in this rug is a direct descendant of those early commissions, where weak madder, walnut hull, and undyed wool were chosen to read as a quiet ground rather than a competing pattern.

Three weavers shared the loom in India for roughly six months. Around 1.7 million Persian-asymmetric knots were tied by feel against a vertical beam, the wool drawn from long-staple fleece that takes vegetable dye to the soft mid-tones the Ziegler tradition asks for. The dye baths were prepared in copper vats and matured for two weeks before the wool was lowered.

The composition

A pale ivory ground holds a quiet field of vine work in tan and faded madder. The corner spandrels echo the centre without repeating it, and the border is a single restrained guard rather than the layered frames that turn lesser Zieglers busy. The colour is not stable. The tan will lighten over a decade of light, the ivory will warm into bone, and the indigo accents will deepen. A vegetable-dyed Ziegler arrives ready to start, not finished.

Period Zieglers in comparable condition trade at international auction in the range of fifteen to forty thousand dollars when they appear at all. This is a new weaving in the same tradition, on the same kind of loom, in the same fibre, at a fraction of that figure. The tan-and-ivory ground sits naturally with walnut, oak, brass, and unbleached linen, and asks for mid-tone walls rather than white. Conservation

Rotate a half turn each spring and autumn so light and traffic age the wool evenly. Vacuum weekly with suction only and the beater bar disengaged. Blot spills with a clean cotton cloth without rubbing. A wool-trained conservator should hand-wash the rug every five to seven years. With this care, the piece runs eighty to a hundred years and outlives its first owners.
