By the late nineteenth century, the workshops associated with the Ziegler tradition had begun reworking the dense floral palmette repeats of classical Persia into open, airy fields suited to the Anglo-American drawing room. The buying agents commissioned weavers to soften the saturation, widen the spacing, and let the ground show through. The tan and ivory rug in front of you carries that lineage forward, with a vine and palmette field that breathes rather than crowds.

Two to three weavers shared the loom for roughly four months in India to complete this 6' x 9' (183 x 274 cm) carpet. The wool is hand-spun, plied to a medium twist, and tied knot by knot against a vertical beam. The pile takes natural dye in soft tones because the fibre was scoured rather than chemically bleached, and the foundation is cotton, drawn tight to keep the rug flat under decades of use.

The composition

A warm tan ground washed with the slight irregularity that comes only from hand-dyed wool. Ivory palmettes drift across it in a half-drop repeat, framed by a single restrained guard band rather than the layered borders that make lesser Ziegler weavings feel busy. The two tones converse rather than contrast. Over the next decade the tan will lighten into biscuit and the ivory will warm into bone.

Conservation

Rotate a half turn each spring and autumn so light and traffic age the rug evenly. Vacuum weekly with suction only, beater bar disengaged. Blot spills with a clean cotton cloth, never rub. Hand-wash by a wool-trained conservator every five to seven years. With this care the rug will run eighty years and pass cleanly to a second owner.
