The Ziegler tradition began in the late nineteenth century when European buyers asked the looms of western Persia to soften the dense classical floral fields into open, airy compositions that sat better with the lighter palettes of Anglo-American interiors. The pattern in front of you is a direct descendant of that lineage, redrawn for a contemporary room without losing the rhythm of the original drawing.

3 weavers shared the loom for 6 months. 1.4 million hand-tied asymmetric knots, each one set against a vertical beam by feel rather than by counting. The pile is hand-spun wool, chosen for its long staple and its ability to hold vegetable dye to deep saturation without losing the slight tonal variation that gives a hand-knotted rug its patina. The foundation is cotton, which holds the rug flat and square through decades of use.

The composition

The ivory ground carries the ziegler drawing without competing with it. The colour is not flat. Hand-spun yarn dyed in small lots produces faint horizontal banding called abrash, the signature of weaving made in batches rather than runs. Over the next decade the saturation will settle, the lighter passages will warm, and the rug will read as a single matured surface rather than a new object.

Conservation

Rotate a half turn each spring and autumn so light and footfall age the pile evenly. Vacuum weekly with suction only, beater bar disengaged. Blot spills with a clean cotton cloth, never rub. A wool-trained conservator can hand-wash the rug every five to seven years. With this care, the piece runs sixty to a hundred years and outlives its first owners.
