A tan and ivory Ziegler sits inside the most documented end of the export carpet tradition, the palette that Ziegler and Company developed in the late nineteenth century for Anglo-American drawing rooms that wanted historical authority without the saturated colour of village Persian work. The botanical repeat is open, the borders are restrained, the field reads as warm parchment rather than as a focal pattern. The drawing in this rug carries that history forward, holding the original Sultanabad geometry in a palette that disappears comfortably into mixed-wood interiors.

Three to four weavers shared this loom for roughly six months. The pile is hand-knotted wool on a cotton foundation. The tan ground was built across a sequence of weld and walnut hull baths on lightly mordanted wool; the ivory comes from undyed New Zealand fleece. The vine work and corner motifs use madder for the soft red touches and oak gall for the deeper outline. Each skein dyes at a slightly different intensity, which is why the field carries the gentle abrash that distinguishes vegetable-dyed Zieglers from their synthetic counterparts.

The composition

A warm tan ground softly varied across the field. Open vine work in ivory and faint coral runs corner to corner. The border is a single guard band in deeper walnut, restrained the way the best classical Sultanabads were restrained. Over the next decade the tan will lighten where light falls hardest, and the ivory will warm into bone. The rug arrives ready to start aging.

What you are buying

Antique tan-and-ivory Sultanabads at comparable scale and condition trade at Christie's and Sotheby's between $22,000 and $40,000 when they surface. This is a new weaving in the same tradition, on the same kind of loom, with the same fibre and dye process. The rug appreciates with use rather than depreciating, and the dye continues to deepen into its final character across the first decade.

The piece in a room

10' x 14' (305 x 427 cm) is the canonical scale for a long living-dining hall or a primary library. The tan and ivory palette pairs with limewash walls, raw linen, oak and walnut floors, and either dark-leather or pale-fabric upholstery. It is the rare large rug that disappears into the architecture and lets everything else in the room speak.

Conservation

Rotate a half turn twice a year so traffic ages the field evenly. Weekly suction vacuum, beater bar off. Blot spills with cotton; never rub. Hand-wash by a wool conservator every five years. The pale ground is more sensitive to red wine and turmeric than darker fields, so address spills inside the first hour.

Day-to-day care

  • Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
  • Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
  • Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
  • Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.

Deep cleaning

  • Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
  • Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
  • For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.

Storage

  • Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
  • Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
  • Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked

How long will shipping take?

Most metros (Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata) receive their order in 3-5 business days. Tier-2 cities take 5-7 business days, and remote pin codes (J&K, North-East, Andamans) take 7-10 business days. Use the pin-code checker above for a concrete delivery date.

Will the colour exactly match the photo?

Each carpet is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.

Can I get a sample before buying?

Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for ₹500 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp with the SKU and your shipping pin code to arrange a sample.

What is your returns process?

Returns are accepted within 7 days of delivery in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email care@rugsville.in or message us on WhatsApp with your order number — we arrange free reverse pickup in most pin codes. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.

Do you take custom orders?

Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted carpets typically take 4-8 weeks depending on size and complexity. Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.

Is Cash on Delivery (COD) available?

COD is available for most pin codes in zones A and B (metros and tier-2 cities). Some remote pin codes are prepaid only — the pin-code checker above will tell you immediately.
