New Zealand wool is the only fibre that takes vegetable dye to the saturation a Sultanabad design demands without losing the slight irregularity that gives the carpet its patina. The Sultanabad type was codified in the late nineteenth century when the Swiss firm Ziegler & Co. set up commissioning offices in western Persia and asked weavers to soften the dense floral repeats of classical work into open, airy fields with restrained borders. The Anglo-American drawing rooms of the period absorbed the result. The lineage is unbroken.

This 8' x 10' (244 x 305 cm) ivory carpet was woven by three weavers across roughly five months on an upright loom. Around 2.4 million Persian asymmetric knots, each tied by feel. The pile is fourteen-micron New Zealand wool. The vegetable dyes were prepared from madder root, indigo leaf, oak gall, and walnut hull, each matured in copper vats for two to three weeks before the wool was lowered into the bath. Cotton foundation throughout.

The composition

An ivory ground that holds the eye open. Across it, a vine pattern in muted indigo, faded rose, and oxidised rust running corner to corner with the rhythm only plant dye produces. The medallion is barely indicated, suggested rather than stated. The border is a single restrained guard band rather than the layered borders that turn lesser Sultanabad weavings busy. Direct sunlight will lighten the ivory toward bone over five years and deepen the indigos.

What you are buying

Antique Sultanabads of this scale with 1900-1920 provenance sell at Christie's and Sotheby's between $20,000 and $40,000 when they appear in good condition. This is a new weaving in the same tradition, on the same kind of upright loom, to the same density, in the same New Zealand wool. The rug appreciates with use rather than depreciating. There is no other category of object you place under foot with that property at any price.

The piece in a room

8' x 10' is the working scale for a primary living area or a medium dining room. The rug expects an eight-seater dining table, a sofa-and-two-chair arrangement, or a substantial bed pushed into the field with carpet showing on three sides. The ivory ground wants mid-tone walls, a soft clay or warm grey, that hold the saturation. Walnut and brass furniture work; high-gloss black or chrome competes with the wool's matte surface.

Conservation

Rotate a half turn twice a year so light and traffic age the rug evenly. Vacuum weekly, suction only, no beater bar. Blot any spills with cool water and a cotton cloth. A wool-trained hand wash every five years will lift the dust the vacuum cannot reach. With this care the carpet runs eighty to a hundred years and will outlive its first owners.

Day-to-day care

  • Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
  • Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
  • Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
  • Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.

Deep cleaning

  • Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
  • Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
  • For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.

Storage

  • Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
  • Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
  • Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked

How long will shipping take?

Most metros (Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata) receive their order in 3-5 business days. Tier-2 cities take 5-7 business days, and remote pin codes (J&K, North-East, Andamans) take 7-10 business days. Use the pin-code checker above for a concrete delivery date.

Will the colour exactly match the photo?

Each carpet is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.

Can I get a sample before buying?

Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for ₹500 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp with the SKU and your shipping pin code to arrange a sample.

What is your returns process?

Returns are accepted within 7 days of delivery in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email care@rugsville.in or message us on WhatsApp with your order number — we arrange free reverse pickup in most pin codes. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.

Do you take custom orders?

Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted carpets typically take 4-8 weeks depending on size and complexity. Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.

Is Cash on Delivery (COD) available?

COD is available for most pin codes in zones A and B (metros and tier-2 cities). Some remote pin codes are prepaid only — the pin-code checker above will tell you immediately.
