A rust ground holding beige tracery is the colour combination that built the Ziegler reputation in the late 1800s. European drawing rooms wanted a Persian carpet that did not shout, and the Manchester firm asked weavers in western Persia to lay open palmette work over warm earth grounds rather than over the saturated reds of Kashan or the indigo of Tabriz. This rug carries that brief into a contemporary weaving with a rust field that holds beige vine through a measured all-over repeat.

Three weavers worked the vertical loom for roughly five months. The pile is hand-spun New Zealand wool laid on a cotton foundation, tied in Persian asymmetric knots one row at a time. Dye baths were prepared from madder root for the rust, walnut hull for the deeper tan, and pomegranate rind for the lighter beige. Each lot was matured for two weeks in copper before the wool was lowered. The clipped pile was sun-dried, mineral-washed, and brushed back to settle the saturation into antique register.

The composition

Rust is the dominant value, with beige working through it as vine, leaf, and the spine of each palmette. Looked at from a doorway the rug reads as a single warm wash. From two metres the vine resolves into individual rosettes traveling diagonal across the field. The colour is not stable. The rust will deepen by a half shade over the first decade and the beige will warm toward bone, the exchange the lineage was always built around.

What you are buying

Period Ziegler Sultanabads at this size with similar palette and condition reach forty to seventy-five thousand US dollars at international auction. This rug shares the construction, fibre, density, and lineage of those antiques. The rug appreciates with use rather than depreciating, which is the property no other floor object holds at any price.

The piece in a room

8' x 10' (244 x 305 cm) sits cleanly under a primary seating group with all four sofa legs landing on wool. The rust grounds bone walls and chalk plaster. The palette pairs with walnut, brass, vellum lampshades, and a single large work in saturated colour above the sofa. Direct daylight for a few hours a day keeps the dye depth honest.

Conservation

Rotate the rug a half turn each spring and autumn. Vacuum weekly with the beater bar disengaged. Blot, never rub. Hand-wash by a wool conservator at the five-year mark. With this care the piece runs eight to ten decades in regular use.

Day-to-day care

  • Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
  • Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
  • Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
  • Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.

Deep cleaning

  • Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
  • Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
  • For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.

Storage

  • Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
  • Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
  • Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked

How long will shipping take?

Most metros (Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata) receive their order in 3-5 business days. Tier-2 cities take 5-7 business days, and remote pin codes (J&K, North-East, Andamans) take 7-10 business days. Use the pin-code checker above for a concrete delivery date.

Will the colour exactly match the photo?

Each carpet is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.

Can I get a sample before buying?

Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for ₹500 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp with the SKU and your shipping pin code to arrange a sample.

What is your returns process?

Returns are accepted within 7 days of delivery in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email care@rugsville.in or message us on WhatsApp with your order number — we arrange free reverse pickup in most pin codes. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.

Do you take custom orders?

Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted carpets typically take 4-8 weeks depending on size and complexity. Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.

Is Cash on Delivery (COD) available?

COD is available for most pin codes in zones A and B (metros and tier-2 cities). Some remote pin codes are prepaid only — the pin-code checker above will tell you immediately.
