Rugsville Ziegler Rust Beige Wool Carpet -6' x 9'

One of the things the Ziegler tradition got right was that an oversized palmette repeat, drawn loosely on an open ground, will quietly hold a room without dominating it. That insight came from late nineteenth-century commissions in central Iran and remains the working brief for any honest Ziegler weaving today. The rust-and-beige Ziegler in front of you, the second in a closely related pair from the same workshop run, follows that brief precisely.

Two to three weavers in India worked the loom for close to four months. The drawing is enlarged from a classical Persian cartoon and stripped of the extra colours that make older Persian rugs busy, leaving four working tones rather than eight. New Zealand wool was used for the pile because it accepts both the soft beige ground and the deeper rust palmette work without losing depth in either.

The composition

A beige ground holds rust palmettes scaled deliberately large, with walnut vine work tying the corners back into the centre. The border is a single guard band in close values. The whole rug runs in a narrow palette with one warm accent, which is what gives it the Ziegler discipline. As the wool ages, the rust will warm and the beige will move toward bone, deepening the relationship between the two values.

Antique Ziegler carpets of comparable scale and palette appear at the major auction rooms at thirty thousand US dollars and upward when they come up. This is a contemporary weaving on the same upright loom, in the same fibre, to the same compositional logic. The rug acquires patina with use rather than wearing thin, which is the property that distinguishes hand-knotted work from any other floor surface.

The piece in a room

6' x 9' (183 x 274 cm) is the right scale for a primary seating arrangement or a six-seat dining table. The rust-and-beige palette pairs with cream walls, walnut and oak wood, brass, and undyed linen upholstery. The rug reads especially well in rooms that take indirect daylight, where the close values are honoured by the eye.

Conservation

Vacuum weekly, suction only, beater bar off. Rotate the carpet end-to-end twice a year. Blot spills with cotton cloth, never rub. A wool conservator should wash the rug every five to seven years. With this care the carpet runs eighty years.
