Knotted wool is the oldest continuously practiced fine art in textile. Plain weaves came first, but the discipline of tying individual knots row by row to build a representational field has been kept alive by working studios for a thousand years. The piece in front of you is a contemporary entry in that long line.

The carpet was put up on a vertical loom in northern India. 2 weavers shared the work over roughly 4 months, tying knots by feel against the warp without lifting the cartoon between rows. Around 0.4 million asymmetric knots in total, with wool pile on a cotton foundation. The red register is built up across multiple dye lots so the eye reads variation rather than a single flat field, and the pile was clipped and washed by hand once the rug came off the loom.

The composition

A composition built around a deep red field with the slow burn of madder-dyed wool. The pattern develops at a measured pace and the colour holds its register across the field. The colour will deepen by a quarter step over the first three years of use, the way wool dye always does as the surface oxidises and the fibre relaxes into the field.

What you are buying

A democratic entry to hand-knotted wool work. The construction is real, the wool is real, and the rug will outlive most of the furniture it sits beneath. Treat it as a long-term piece rather than as seasonal decor.

The piece in a room

At 4' × 6' (122 × 183 cm) the rug holds an entry vestibule, a small study, the foot of a bed, or a single armchair beside a window. It is the right scale to introduce the red palette into a room without forcing the rest of the furnishing to follow it. The pattern resolves close in and recedes at distance, which keeps the rug useful in rooms whose proportions are not generous. Reads against limewashed walls, plaster finishes, and stone-coloured paint in the cooler half of the spectrum.

Conservation

Vacuum on suction only, weekly. Rotate the rug a half turn each spring and autumn to keep the wear even. Address spills by blotting outward from the centre. A professional hand wash every five years preserves the dye and protects the foundation. Stored properly, the carpet outlives its first owners.

Day-to-day care

  • Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
  • Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
  • Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
  • Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.

Deep cleaning

  • Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
  • Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
  • For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.

Storage

  • Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
  • Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
  • Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked

How long will shipping take?

Most metros (Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata) receive their order in 3-5 business days. Tier-2 cities take 5-7 business days, and remote pin codes (J&K, North-East, Andamans) take 7-10 business days. Use the pin-code checker above for a concrete delivery date.

Will the colour exactly match the photo?

Each carpet is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.

Can I get a sample before buying?

Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for ₹500 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp with the SKU and your shipping pin code to arrange a sample.

What is your returns process?

Returns are accepted within 7 days of delivery in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email care@rugsville.in or message us on WhatsApp with your order number — we arrange free reverse pickup in most pin codes. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.

Do you take custom orders?

Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted carpets typically take 4-8 weeks depending on size and complexity. Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.

Is Cash on Delivery (COD) available?

COD is available for most pin codes in zones A and B (metros and tier-2 cities). Some remote pin codes are prepaid only — the pin-code checker above will tell you immediately.

Have a question about this carpet?
