Rugsville Ziegler Purple Brown Wool Carpet 9' x 12'

Purple is the most demanding ground colour in the Persian carpet vocabulary because there is no single plant dye that produces a clean purple. The colour has to be built from indigo and madder layered in successive baths, with the mordant pH calibrated precisely so the two pigments meet at the desired wavelength rather than separating into a muddy aubergine. The Manchester firm did not commission purple-ground Zieglers in any volume because the dye process took twice as long and the failure rate at the dye lot was high.

Four weavers shared the vertical loom for around six months. Six months at the upright loom, three to four weavers reading the cartoon by feel. The purple was built from layered indigo and madder over four short dye baths, with weld for the warmer underlying tones. The brown came from walnut hull layered with oak gall. Each colour matured in copper vessels for two to three weeks. After clipping the rug spent four days in sun and a long mineral wash that mellowed the saturation into antique register.

The composition

A deep purple field carrying long brown palmette and vine in measured intervals. The purple is not flat. It carries faint horizontal abrash from successive dye lots that read marginally different, the trace of the layered dye process. The brown reads as warm tobacco against the cool purple, and the contrast holds the geometry legibly at room scale. The border is a single guard band held narrow so the field carries the design.

What you are buying

Antique purple-ground Persian carpets are scarce in the auction market because the dye process was rare in the historical workshops, and the few examples that appear reach forty to ninety thousand US dollars. This rug shares the loom architecture, the fibre, the Persian knot, and the layered plant-dye discipline of those rare antiques. At one and a half lac it appreciates with use rather than depreciating.

9' x 12' (274 x 366 cm) anchors a primary drawing room. The deep purple pairs particularly well with modern interiors that want an unusual ground colour without losing the historical visual weight of a Persian palmette field. Pairs with brushed brass, walnut casework, oxblood leather, and a single large work above the sofa.

Conservation

Rotate the rug a half turn each spring and autumn. Vacuum weekly, suction only, beater bar off. Blot spills at once with clean cotton, never rub. Hand-wash by a trained wool conservator every six years. With this care the rug crosses a century in regular use.
