Ziegler is a design tradition rather than a place. A German firm based in Manchester commissioned the original carpets in 1883, working with master weavers in western Iran to soften the dense Persian floral repeats into the open, ivory-grounded fields the Anglo-American collector wanted. The recipe was specific. Long-staple wool, vegetable dye, restrained borders, fields that aged into bone and faded indigo rather than holding their initial saturation. Contemporary Indian floor-loom workshops have inherited this brief and the piece in front of you is a working example.

Three weavers shared the loom for around five months in India. Around 2.6 million asymmetric knots tied against hand-spun cotton warps. The pile is New Zealand wool chosen for its acceptance of plant dye, with the purple drawn from a layered indigo and madder bath that produces a deeper saturation than either dye produces alone. Brown was pulled from walnut hull and oak gall. The piece was finished with a slow tea wash that drops the new-wool brightness into the patinated surface the Ziegler tradition prefers.

The composition

The purple reads as a controlled royal tone with a faint blue shift at certain angles. The brown ground holds the floral repeat in a measured rhythm, no central medallion, with a single deep border framing the composition. Over the next decade the purple will lighten and reveal the indigo undertone the dye carries; the brown will warm toward walnut. The wool develops a patina that synthetic-dyed carpets in this idiom never reach.

Period Zieglers in 9' x 12' format with 1890 to 1910 attribution and comparable condition trade at international auction in the range of $30,000 to $60,000 when they surface. This is a contemporary weaving inside the same tradition, on the same kind of loom, to the same density, in the same fibre. The carpet appreciates with use rather than depreciating. Rotate a half turn each spring and autumn so light and foot traffic age the wool evenly. Vacuum weekly with suction only, beater bar disengaged. Blot spills with a clean cotton cloth, never rub. Schedule a hand-wash by a wool-trained conservator every five years. With this care the carpet runs eighty to a hundred years on a floor.
