A pale blue Ziegler is the harder commission in the lineage. Beige, rust, and ivory grounds were the most requested colours of the original 1880s programme because they sat under English drawing-room light without competition. A light blue ground asks the weaver to push indigo to a particular saturation and then wash it back without losing the lanolin glow that gives the pile its body. This rug holds that balance, with a soft blue field carrying beige palmette in an open all-over rhythm.
Across just under six months a team of four weavers worked the vertical loom in steady rotation. The pile is hand-spun New Zealand wool on cotton warp, tied in Persian asymmetric knots row by row. The blue was layered through three short indigo baths rather than dipped once, the way an oil painter glazes thin transparent passes over an undercoat. Beige was drawn from walnut hull and pomegranate rind. The clipped pile was sun-dried over four days and given a long mineral wash to mellow the saturation toward antique register.
The composition
A pale blue field that reads grey in shadow and clearly indigo in daylight. Beige vine and palmette move across the field in a wide repeat. The border is held to a single narrow guard band so the field does the work. The horizontal abrash that runs through the wool is the trace of small-batch dye lots sitting beside one another, a fingerprint of plant-dye work that machine finishing cannot imitate.
What you are buying
Antique Ziegler carpets in pale blue and beige register at 9' x 12' carry estimates of forty-five to ninety thousand US dollars at the major rug auctions when condition matches. This rug is woven on the same vertical loom, in the same Persian knot, in the same long-staple wool, to the same density. At one and a half lac it sits at a fraction of the auction comparable. It appreciates with use.
The piece in a room
9' x 12' (274 x 366 cm) carries a ten-seat dining table or a deep sectional with the seating landing on the wool. The blue grounds rooms with bone walls and reads cooler against north light. Pairs with washed oak, brushed brass, raw linen, and a single large work in saturated colour. The rug benefits from a few hours of indirect daylight a day to keep the indigo legible.
Conservation
Half-turn the rug each spring and autumn. Vacuum weekly, suction only, beater bar off. Blot spills at once with clean cotton, never rub. Hand-wash by a trained wool conservator every six years. With this care the piece runs ninety years.

Day-to-day care
- Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
- Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
- Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
- Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.
Deep cleaning
- Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
- Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
- For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.
Storage
- Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
- Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
- Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked
How long will shipping take?
Most metros (Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata) receive their order in 3-5 business days. Tier-2 cities take 5-7 business days, and remote pin codes (J&K, North-East, Andamans) take 7-10 business days. Use the pin-code checker above for a concrete delivery date.
Will the colour exactly match the photo?
Each carpet is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.
Can I get a sample before buying?
Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for ₹500 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp with the SKU and your shipping pin code to arrange a sample.
What is your returns process?
Returns are accepted within 7 days of delivery in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email care@rugsville.in or message us on WhatsApp with your order number — we arrange free reverse pickup in most pin codes. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.
Do you take custom orders?
Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted carpets typically take 4-8 weeks depending on size and complexity. Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.
Is Cash on Delivery (COD) available?
COD is available for most pin codes in zones A and B (metros and tier-2 cities). Some remote pin codes are prepaid only — the pin-code checker above will tell you immediately.
