The Persian carpet vocabulary moved into the Indian subcontinent in the sixteenth century through the Mughal court ateliers, where weavers from western Iran were resettled and asked to translate their classical motifs onto Indian looms. The grammar stayed Persian. The hand became Indian. The resulting tradition has run in continuous workshop production for almost five hundred years and has produced some of the most sought-after carpets in the international market.
This blue piece was hand-knotted in India by 2 weavers over two to three months. The pile is hand-spun wool tied to a cotton foundation at about 120 knots per square inch, putting the total knot count for this 4' round (122 cm diameter) close to about 217,147 individual knots. Hand-spun yarn carries the fine variation that machine yarn never achieves, and the irregular grain is what gives the field its life under raking light.
The composition
The palette runs around blue with quiet supporting tones drawn into the body of the field. Pattern density tightens at the centre and opens toward the edges, so the rug works as a single composed surface rather than a tile. Under direct light the colour deepens. Under indirect light it softens. The piece is built to age inside a room rather than to look static against it. Each year of use adds a small layer of patina the loom cannot reproduce.
The piece in a room
The round format at 4' round (4' round, 122 cm diameter) is the working scale for entry foyers, between-the-beds bedside placement, and for the centre of a small library or sitting room. A circular rug pulls the eye into the centre of a space and gives a square room a counterpoint geometry. Blue pairs well with mid-tone wood and with painted plaster walls.
Conservation
Rotate the carpet 180 degrees on a six-month cycle so direct light and footfall age the field uniformly. Use a suction-only vacuum at low power. Blot any spill at once with a dry cotton cloth. Have the rug hand-washed by a wool-trained conservator on a five-year cycle to flush out fine grit and refresh the dye depth. With reasonable care the piece is generational and gains rather than loses character with age.

Day-to-day care
- Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
- Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
- Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
- Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.
Deep cleaning
- Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
- Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
- For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.
Storage
- Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
- Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
- Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked
How long will shipping take?
Most metros (Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata) receive their order in 3-5 business days. Tier-2 cities take 5-7 business days, and remote pin codes (J&K, North-East, Andamans) take 7-10 business days. Use the pin-code checker above for a concrete delivery date.
Will the colour exactly match the photo?
Each carpet is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.
Can I get a sample before buying?
Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for ₹500 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp with the SKU and your shipping pin code to arrange a sample.
What is your returns process?
Returns are accepted within 7 days of delivery in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email care@rugsville.in or message us on WhatsApp with your order number — we arrange free reverse pickup in most pin codes. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.
Do you take custom orders?
Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted carpets typically take 4-8 weeks depending on size and complexity. Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.
Is Cash on Delivery (COD) available?
COD is available for most pin codes in zones A and B (metros and tier-2 cities). Some remote pin codes are prepaid only — the pin-code checker above will tell you immediately.
