Rugsville Ziegler Ivory Gold Wool Carpet 8' x 10'

Ivory and gold sit at the formal end of the Ziegler-tradition palette. The pairing was reserved historically for carpets commissioned for state rooms, libraries, and ceremonial halls because the two values catch light at the same time and turn the floor into a luminous ground rather than a dark anchor. The pattern in this carpet works in that older formal register, with the floral repeat drawn to fill the field rather than disappear into it. The result is a piece built to carry a room.

Two weavers worked the vertical loom in India for around five months. Roughly 2.3 million Persian-asymmetric knots tied by hand on a cotton warp, the wool hand-spun in lots small enough to leave subtle abrash visible through the field. The gold accents were struck from a saffron and pomegranate bath, the ivory ground left as undyed wool with a light alum mordant. After the carpet came off the loom it was washed three times in cold water and laid out in the sun to set the dye.

The composition

An ivory field carries floral and palmette work in soft gold and faded sage. The central medallion sits at classical Ziegler proportions, with the corner pendants resolved into the field. The border holds a single vine band against a slightly deeper ivory guard. Gold against ivory reads as a light-carrying ground rather than a saturated colour ground. The palette will warm slightly with age as the wool oxidises, but the ivory holds its position better than darker grounds and the contrast with the gold sharpens over time.

Hand-knotted carpets in this palette are the most demanding to weave because every error in the pile registers visibly against the light ground. Conservation
