Rugsville Ziegler Handknotted Beige Wool Carpet 8' x 10'

Ziegler is the name of a design rather than a place. The vocabulary was built in the 1880s by a European trading firm that asked western Persian villages to open the dense classical floral repeats into the airy fields the new Anglo-American clientele preferred. The beige ground carried in this rug is a direct descendant of that commission, a quiet undyed cream chosen because it lets a room of warm wood, leather, and brass speak without competing for attention.

Three weavers in India shared the loom for roughly six months. Around 1.7 million Persian-asymmetric knots were tied row by row against a vertical beam, the wool drawn from long-staple fleece washed before spinning so the staple takes plant dye to the soft mid-tones the Ziegler tradition asks for. The dye baths were matured in copper vats for two weeks. The beige is undyed cream wool, the accents are walnut hull, weak madder, and a single short indigo bath.

The composition

An open beige field carries a measured all-over vine in soft tan and faded indigo. The medallion is implied rather than drawn, a quiet thickening of the pattern toward the centre. The border is restrained, a single deep guard band rather than the layered borders that turn lesser Zieglers crowded. The colour will keep moving for a decade. The beige warms into bone, the tan lightens into honey, and the indigo settles deeper into the pile.

This is a new weaving in the same tradition, on the same loom geometry, in the same fibre at the same density. Conservation

Rotate a half turn every six months. Vacuum weekly with suction alone, beater bar disengaged. Blot any spill at once with a clean cotton cloth, water only. A wool-trained conservator should hand-wash the rug every five to seven years. The piece runs eighty to a hundred years on a domestic floor under that regime.
