Grey is the recent addition to the Ziegler colour vocabulary. The original commissions of the 1880s leaned on browns, ochres, and terracottas, but contemporary Indian workshops have figured out how to push the cooler end of the vegetable dye palette using oak gall and iron mordant in combination, producing greys with the depth and irregularity that synthetic dye cannot match. The piece in front of you uses that grey as the primary tonal anchor against a beige floral field.
Three weavers spent close to seven months on the loom in India. Hand-spun wool was knotted across a cotton warp and weft. The grey passages were dyed from oak gall with iron mordant, the beige left close to undyed wool, and the muted accents picked out in walnut hull and pomegranate skin. Each colour was matured for two weeks in the dye vat before the wool was lowered, with a week of air-curing after washing to fix the pigment deep.
The composition
A beige ground holds floral tracery in soft grey, walnut, and faded ochre. The drawing is loose, distributed across the field, with no centred medallion to claim the eye. The grey reads cool against the warm beige, the contrast staying within a half-tone so the carpet feels balanced rather than divided. As the wool ages, the grey will warm slightly and the beige will deepen, the two colours moving toward each other rather than apart.
What you are buying
Antique Ziegler-pattern carpets in 8' x 10' with grey passages are particularly scarce, since the colour was less common in the original commissions. New examples in vegetable dye and the same density clear sixty to ninety thousand rupees at the source in India. The Western dealer markup is three to four. The carpet appreciates with use rather than depreciating, and the grey palette positions the rug for contemporary as well as classical room compositions.
The piece in a room
8' x 10' (244 x 305 cm) is the canonical drawing-room scale, sitting under a sectional sofa or anchoring a six-to-eight-seater dining table. The grey and beige pair with limewashed walls, oak floors, brushed brass, and raw linen, and the cooler tone makes the carpet sit equally well in a contemporary architectural shell as in a traditional one. Pairs particularly well with mid-century furniture in walnut and steel.
Conservation
Rotate a half turn each spring and autumn so foot traffic and light age the carpet evenly. Vacuum weekly, suction only, beater bar off. Blot spills with a clean cotton cloth, never rub a vegetable-dyed wool. A trained conservator should hand-wash the rug every five years. With this care, the carpet runs eighty to a hundred years and the dye work continues to develop.

Day-to-day care
- Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
- Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
- Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
- Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.
Deep cleaning
- Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
- Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
- For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.
Storage
- Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
- Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
- Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked
How long will shipping take?
Most metros (Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata) receive their order in 3-5 business days. Tier-2 cities take 5-7 business days, and remote pin codes (J&K, North-East, Andamans) take 7-10 business days. Use the pin-code checker above for a concrete delivery date.
Will the colour exactly match the photo?
Each carpet is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.
Can I get a sample before buying?
Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for ₹500 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp with the SKU and your shipping pin code to arrange a sample.
What is your returns process?
Returns are accepted within 7 days of delivery in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email care@rugsville.in or message us on WhatsApp with your order number — we arrange free reverse pickup in most pin codes. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.
Do you take custom orders?
Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted carpets typically take 4-8 weeks depending on size and complexity. Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.
Is Cash on Delivery (COD) available?
COD is available for most pin codes in zones A and B (metros and tier-2 cities). Some remote pin codes are prepaid only — the pin-code checker above will tell you immediately.
