Ziegler is a design lineage rather than a place. A German firm based in Manchester set up a buying office in Persia in 1883 and asked weavers to soften the dense classical floral repeats into the open, airy fields the British market preferred. The pattern outlived the firm by a century and continues to be woven today against the same logic of restraint, and the carpet in front of you is a direct descendant of that work.
Three weavers held this loom for around five months. The wool was hand-spun and tied to a cotton warp at moderate density, then taken through a slow finishing wash that pulls the saturation into the warm, walked-in register the Ziegler family is known for. Vegetable dyes were drawn from madder root for the rust, walnut hull for the brown ground, oak gall for the deeper tonics, and indigo for the small accents in the vine work. The wash water was changed three times to settle the wool before the rug was sun-dried over a fortnight.
The composition
A warm brown field with a beige floral lattice loosely scaled across it, anchored by a slim border that steps outward without claiming attention. The brown is not flat. Read closely it carries a faint plum where the indigo overlaps the madder, and a faint amber in the highlights where walnut sits over the cream. That irregularity is the signature of plant dye and the reason a Ziegler reads as an artwork rather than a print.
What you are buying
Ziegler designs of this scale, in vegetable-dyed hand-spun wool, sell through Western dealers at the equivalent of three to six lakh and through auction at slightly less when condition permits. At ninety-nine thousand against a list of nearly four lakh, this is a working bargain on a piece woven to museum-grade specification. The carpet appreciates with use rather than depreciating, and there is no other object in the room with that property.
The piece in a room
8' x 10' (244 x 305 cm) is the working drawing-room scale. The brown ground reads heavier than ivory or rose Zieglers and pairs cleanly with leather, walnut, brass, and lime-washed stone. Lighter walls float the rug forward; darker walls let it settle into the architecture as a considered floor. A six-seater table or a primary sofa group sits within the borders without visual crowding.
Conservation
Rotate a half turn twice a year so light and traffic age the wool evenly. Vacuum weekly, suction only, beater bar disengaged. Blot any spill with a clean cotton cloth before it sets, never rub. Hand-wash by a wool-trained conservator every five years. Properly maintained the carpet runs ninety years and develops the bone, plum, and amber tones an antique Ziegler is collected for.

Day-to-day care
- Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
- Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
- Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
- Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.
Deep cleaning
- Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
- Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
- For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.
Storage
- Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
- Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
- Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Customer Reviews
Frequently asked
How long will shipping take?
Most metros (Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata) receive their order in 3-5 business days. Tier-2 cities take 5-7 business days, and remote pin codes (J&K, North-East, Andamans) take 7-10 business days. Use the pin-code checker above for a concrete delivery date.
Will the colour exactly match the photo?
Each carpet is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.
Can I get a sample before buying?
Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for ₹500 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp with the SKU and your shipping pin code to arrange a sample.
What is your returns process?
Returns are accepted within 7 days of delivery in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email care@rugsville.in or message us on WhatsApp with your order number — we arrange free reverse pickup in most pin codes. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.
Do you take custom orders?
Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted carpets typically take 4-8 weeks depending on size and complexity. Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.
Is Cash on Delivery (COD) available?
COD is available for most pin codes in zones A and B (metros and tier-2 cities). Some remote pin codes are prepaid only — the pin-code checker above will tell you immediately.
