Ziegler is a design language rather than a region. In 1883 a German trading firm operating out of Manchester opened a buying office in Persia and commissioned local workshops to soften the dense classical patterns into the open, airy fields the Anglo-American market wanted. The Ziegler Sultanabad rugs of the 1890s are now among the most actively collected nineteenth-century carpets in the world. The piece in front of you is a contemporary weaving inside that lineage, drawn after antique Ziegler cartoons.
Three to four weavers shared the loom for around six months in India. The structure is a Persian asymmetric knot tied through cotton warp and weft, around 2.6 million knots across the surface. The wool is hand-carded and spun, slightly under-twist so the pile keeps the soft hand collectors associate with the antique tradition. Dyes were vegetable-based, drawn from walnut hull, madder root, and indigo, prepared in copper vats and matured for two weeks before use.
The composition
A warm beige ground carries an open all-over vine in chestnut brown, with occasional palmettes in soft indigo and ivory. The pattern is the diagnostic Ziegler open field: enough drawing to hold the eye, enough negative space to let the field breathe. The brown will mature into a deeper register over a decade and the beige ground will warm into honey. The border is a single wide band of brown carrying paired stylised flower-heads in beige.
What you are buying
Antique Ziegler Sultanabads of late-nineteenth-century origin and comparable scale move through London and New York rooms in the range of twenty-five to sixty thousand US dollars when condition is sound. This is a new weaving in the same tradition, on cotton foundation, in vegetable-dyed hand-spun wool. The piece appreciates as the dyes settle and as the open Ziegler field gains the patina that brings the antique market its premium.
The piece in a room
9' x 12' (274 x 366 cm) is the canonical Ziegler scale, the dimension the original rugs were drawn at for export drawing rooms. Place it under a ten-seat dining table or beneath a long sofa with flanking armchairs. The brown and beige palette is among the most versatile in the carpet world, sitting comfortably with walnut, oak, brass, leather, linen, and stone. The open field accepts furniture above it without fighting the pattern.
Conservation
Rotate twice yearly. Vacuum weekly, suction only. Address spills with immediate downward blotting on dry cotton. Hand wash by a vegetable-dye-trained conservator every five to seven years. The rug runs eighty to a hundred years cared for this way and outlives its first owners as a working object.

Day-to-day care
- Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
- Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
- Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
- Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.
Deep cleaning
- Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
- Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
- For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.
Storage
- Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
- Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
- Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked
How long will shipping take?
Most metros (Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata) receive their order in 3-5 business days. Tier-2 cities take 5-7 business days, and remote pin codes (J&K, North-East, Andamans) take 7-10 business days. Use the pin-code checker above for a concrete delivery date.
Will the colour exactly match the photo?
Each carpet is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.
Can I get a sample before buying?
Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for ₹500 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp with the SKU and your shipping pin code to arrange a sample.
What is your returns process?
Returns are accepted within 7 days of delivery in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email care@rugsville.in or message us on WhatsApp with your order number — we arrange free reverse pickup in most pin codes. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.
Do you take custom orders?
Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted carpets typically take 4-8 weeks depending on size and complexity. Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.
Is Cash on Delivery (COD) available?
COD is available for most pin codes in zones A and B (metros and tier-2 cities). Some remote pin codes are prepaid only — the pin-code checker above will tell you immediately.
