Brown and beige sit closer in value than rust and beige or black and beige, and that proximity is the harder commission for a Ziegler weaver. The two colours have to read as separate values without losing the warm tonal continuity that defines the lineage. The original Manchester commissions of the 1880s asked for this register most often when the carpet was destined for a panelled library, because brown ground holds against walnut and oak more honestly than rust or ivory. This rug carries that brief.

The vertical loom held the piece for about six months under three to four weavers. The pile is hand-spun New Zealand wool on cotton warp, tied in Persian asymmetric knots row by row. The brown was drawn from walnut hull layered with a small amount of madder and oak gall. The beige came from pomegranate rind and lighter walnut. Each dye lot matured in copper vessels for two to three weeks. After clipping the rug spent four days in sun and a long mineral wash to settle the saturation into antique register.

The composition

A warm brown field holding a long beige palmette repeat that travels corner to corner. The vine is drawn loose, the rosettes are spaced wide, and the border is held to a single guard band so the field carries the design. The two values sit close enough that the rug reads as a single warm wash from across a room. From two metres the vine resolves into individual leaves and tendrils. The brown will lift a quarter shade over the first decade as the lanolin in the wool finds the light.

What you are buying

Period Ziegler Sultanabads in the brown and beige register reach forty to seventy-five thousand US dollars at international auction. This rug shares the loom architecture, the Persian knot, the long-staple wool, and the plant-dye process of those antiques. At one and a half lac it sits at a fraction of the auction comparable and appreciates with use rather than depreciating.

The piece in a room

9' x 12' (274 x 366 cm) is the working library scale. The brown grounds panelled walnut and oak rooms in a way ivory or rust cannot. Pairs with leather binding, brass detail, raw linen, and a single large work in a saturated hue above the sofa. South-light rooms warm the brown toward chestnut.

Conservation

Rotate the rug a half turn each spring and autumn. Vacuum weekly, beater bar off. Blot spills at once with cotton, never rub. Hand-wash by a trained wool conservator every six years. With this care the rug crosses a century.

Day-to-day care

  • Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
  • Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
  • Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
  • Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.

Deep cleaning

  • Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
  • Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
  • For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.

Storage

  • Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
  • Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
  • Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked

How long will shipping take?

Most metros (Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata) receive their order in 3-5 business days. Tier-2 cities take 5-7 business days, and remote pin codes (J&K, North-East, Andamans) take 7-10 business days. Use the pin-code checker above for a concrete delivery date.

Will the colour exactly match the photo?

Each carpet is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.

Can I get a sample before buying?

Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for ₹500 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp with the SKU and your shipping pin code to arrange a sample.

What is your returns process?

Returns are accepted within 7 days of delivery in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email care@rugsville.in or message us on WhatsApp with your order number — we arrange free reverse pickup in most pin codes. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.

Do you take custom orders?

Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted carpets typically take 4-8 weeks depending on size and complexity. Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.

Is Cash on Delivery (COD) available?

COD is available for most pin codes in zones A and B (metros and tier-2 cities). Some remote pin codes are prepaid only — the pin-code checker above will tell you immediately.
