About fifteen million hand-tied knots, give or take. Roughly seven months of work on a single vertical loom shared by three to four weavers. That is what a 10' x 14' (305 x 427 cm) Ziegler in this density actually represents in human time. The Ziegler pattern itself was developed in the 1880s when a German firm in Manchester opened a buying office in central Iran and asked local weavers to soften the dense, formal floral repeats of classical Persia into something open enough for a western drawing room.
The pile on this piece is hand-spun wool, chosen for its longer staple and its ability to take colour without losing the slight heather that gives older wool its patina. The foundation is cotton, warped on a vertical beam and tensioned by hand. Each knot was set by feel using the Persian asymmetric tie and combed down with a metal beater before the next row began. The pile depth runs eight to twelve millimetres, deep enough to carry the floral drawing with quiet movement under interior light.
The composition
A warm beige ground anchors scrolling vine work, palmettes, and small blossoms in soft brown, faded rose, and old gold. The pattern is open rather than dense, with breathing room between motifs. Hand-spun wool dyes to a slightly uneven value, so the beige carries quiet variation across the field rather than reading as a single block. Over the years the browns will warm and the beige will deepen toward bone.
What you are buying
Contemporary Ziegler weavings of comparable density, scale, and palette trade through Western dealers in the three to six lakh range with a workshop attribution. This piece is offered direct from the loom at a fraction of that comparable. Hand-knotted wool on a cotton foundation appreciates with use rather than depreciating because every input is a finite material and the labour cannot be replicated by any mechanical process. The Ziegler vocabulary is also one of the most consistently traded categories in the secondary market.
The piece in a room
10' x 14' (305 x 427 cm) is the working scale for a generous formal drawing room or a long dining setting. A brown and beige palette is the most flexible warm-neutral floor colour for an interior already carrying other materials. The piece sits well with walnut, oak, brass, restrained period furniture, and either oil painting or considered modern work. Mid-tone walls hold the saturation best; very pale walls can wash the colour slightly.
Conservation
Vacuum weekly with the beater bar off and suction only. Rotate the rug a half turn each spring and autumn so traffic and sunlight age it evenly. Blot any spill with a clean cotton cloth, never rub. Schedule a hand-wash by a wool-trained conservator every five years. With this care the carpet runs eighty years and longer, gaining the soft patina that older Ziegler pieces are prized for.

Day-to-day care
- Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
- Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
- Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
- Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.
Deep cleaning
- Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
- Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
- For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.
Storage
- Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
- Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
- Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked
How long will shipping take?
Most metros (Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata) receive their order in 3-5 business days. Tier-2 cities take 5-7 business days, and remote pin codes (J&K, North-East, Andamans) take 7-10 business days. Use the pin-code checker above for a concrete delivery date.
Will the colour exactly match the photo?
Each carpet is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.
Can I get a sample before buying?
Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for ₹500 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp with the SKU and your shipping pin code to arrange a sample.
What is your returns process?
Returns are accepted within 7 days of delivery in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email care@rugsville.in or message us on WhatsApp with your order number — we arrange free reverse pickup in most pin codes. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.
Do you take custom orders?
Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted carpets typically take 4-8 weeks depending on size and complexity. Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.
Is Cash on Delivery (COD) available?
COD is available for most pin codes in zones A and B (metros and tier-2 cities). Some remote pin codes are prepaid only — the pin-code checker above will tell you immediately.
