The Ziegler blue is a particular blue. It sits between indigo and slate, deep enough to read as a saturated field at distance, slightly broken on approach by the natural variation that vegetable-dyed wool carries from one knot to the next. Original Ziegler commissions worked with this colour for the rooms of late Victorian and Edwardian collectors who wanted something quieter than the high-key Persian palette and grander than chintz.

This 6' x 9' (183 x 274 cm) carpet was hand-knotted in India by two to three weavers across roughly four and a half months. The blue ground was over-dyed in two indigo baths rather than dipped once, the way a glaze layers over an undercoat in oil paint, which gives the colour the depth that catches and holds light. The wool is hand-spun and the foundation is cotton, double-wefted to keep the body of the rug stable under heavy furniture.

The composition

An expansive blue field worked with an open palmette and vine repeat in soft ivory and rust. The pattern leaves real ground showing between the motifs rather than crowding the surface. The blue carries a faint green shift under daylight and pulls more violet under tungsten. The border is a single restrained band, narrow enough to let the field stay in command of the eye.

What you are buying

Comparable antique Ziegler carpets in blue grounds and this scale sell at international auction in the $10,000 to $25,000 band when they surface in good condition, which is rarely. This is a new weaving in the same lineage, in the same hand-spun fibre, with the same vegetable dye recipe. A rug like this appreciates with use rather than depreciating, and the price band shown is well below comparable dealer pricing in London or New York.

The piece in a room

6' x 9' (183 x 274 cm) anchors a primary bedroom under a queen with the foot exposed, or a small living area with a two-seat sofa and a pair of chairs. The deep blue grounds white walls without making them feel cold and pairs well with brass, walnut, and aged leather. Under direct sunlight the indigo restores depth that interior lighting slowly washes out.

Conservation

Rotate a half turn twice a year so the indigo ages evenly across the field. Vacuum weekly, suction only, with the beater bar disengaged. Blot any spills with a clean cotton cloth and avoid rubbing the pile. Schedule a hand wash by a wool-trained conservator every five years. Properly maintained, the carpet will outlast its first owner.

Day-to-day care

  • Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
  • Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
  • Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
  • Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.

Deep cleaning

  • Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
  • Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
  • For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.

Storage

  • Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
  • Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
  • Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked

How long will shipping take?

Most metros (Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata) receive their order in 3-5 business days. Tier-2 cities take 5-7 business days, and remote pin codes (J&K, North-East, Andamans) take 7-10 business days. Use the pin-code checker above for a concrete delivery date.

Will the colour exactly match the photo?

Each carpet is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.

Can I get a sample before buying?

Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for ₹500 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp with the SKU and your shipping pin code to arrange a sample.

What is your returns process?

Returns are accepted within 7 days of delivery in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email care@rugsville.in or message us on WhatsApp with your order number — we arrange free reverse pickup in most pin codes. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.

Do you take custom orders?

Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted carpets typically take 4-8 weeks depending on size and complexity. Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.

Is Cash on Delivery (COD) available?

COD is available for most pin codes in zones A and B (metros and tier-2 cities). Some remote pin codes are prepaid only — the pin-code checker above will tell you immediately.
