By the late nineteenth century, the workshops at Sultanabad in western Iran had reorganised the classical Persian floral repeat into the open, low-density field that the Ziegler firm of Manchester wanted for the new English drawing rooms. The pattern in this rug descends directly from that commercial reformation. Vine work spreads across the field at a relaxed pace, the palmettes are spaced for breathing room rather than for density, and the border carries a single restrained guard band. Ziegler weavings were the first Persian carpets engineered for foreign rooms, and that discipline is what makes them sit cleanly inside contemporary interiors a century later.
Three to four weavers shared the loom for roughly seven months on this 10' x 14' (305 x 427 cm) piece. Hand-spun wool was tied knot by knot against a cotton foundation, and the dye lots were prepared in small batches from indigo, madder, and walnut hull so the field carries the slow tonal drift that distinguishes a vegetable-dyed weaving from a chemically uniform one.
The composition
The ground reads as a deep, slightly variegated blue, with vinework in ivory and soft rust drawn across it at a botanical pace. There is no medallion. The eye is allowed to wander instead of being pulled to a centre, which is the entire premise of the Ziegler reformation. Over the next ten to fifteen years the indigo will deepen, the rust will lighten toward terracotta, and the ivory will warm into bone, so the rug arrives as a starting state rather than a finished one.
What you are buying
Period Ziegler carpets in this scale and condition appear at international auction in the range of $25,000 to $55,000 on the rare occasions they surface. The piece in front of you was woven on the same kind of loom, in the same tradition, to the same hand-spun standards. At ₹1,79,999 against an MSRP of ₹3,68,500, it is priced well below the cost of building it again from scratch. A handmade carpet of this density appreciates with use rather than depreciating.
The piece in a room
10' x 14' is the working scale for a generous sitting room or a long dining hall. The blue field reads as architecture rather than as decoration, which means it pairs cleanly with linen upholstery, with walnut and rosewood, and with both lime-washed and cool-grey walls. Direct daylight will mature the dye depth rather than wash it out.
Conservation
Rotate one half turn each spring and autumn so foot traffic and light age the pile evenly. Vacuum weekly with suction only, beater bar disengaged. Blot any spill with a clean cotton cloth and never rub. Hand-wash by a wool-trained conservator every five to seven years. With this regimen the rug runs eighty to a hundred years.

Day-to-day care
- Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
- Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
- Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
- Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.
Deep cleaning
- Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
- Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
- For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.
Storage
- Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
- Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
- Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked
How long will shipping take?
Most metros (Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata) receive their order in 3-5 business days. Tier-2 cities take 5-7 business days, and remote pin codes (J&K, North-East, Andamans) take 7-10 business days. Use the pin-code checker above for a concrete delivery date.
Will the colour exactly match the photo?
Each carpet is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.
Can I get a sample before buying?
Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for ₹500 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp with the SKU and your shipping pin code to arrange a sample.
What is your returns process?
Returns are accepted within 7 days of delivery in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email care@rugsville.in or message us on WhatsApp with your order number — we arrange free reverse pickup in most pin codes. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.
Do you take custom orders?
Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted carpets typically take 4-8 weeks depending on size and complexity. Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.
Is Cash on Delivery (COD) available?
COD is available for most pin codes in zones A and B (metros and tier-2 cities). Some remote pin codes are prepaid only — the pin-code checker above will tell you immediately.
