Rugsville Ziegler Beige Wool Carpet 9' x 12'

A beige Ziegler with no second principal colour is the most demanding commission in the lineage. There is no rust to anchor the eye, no indigo to outline the drawing. The whole rug rests on the calibration of a single warm tonal range, with the palmette and vine reading as deeper or lighter shades of the same field colour rather than as separate values. That single-value discipline is the reason monochrome Zieglers were the most expensive of the original 1880s commissions, and the reason they remain so.

A loom session of nearly six months drew on four weavers working the vertical beam in shifts. The pile is hand-spun New Zealand wool on cotton warp, tied in Persian asymmetric knots one row at a time. The dye lots were drawn from walnut hull, pomegranate rind, oak gall, and a small amount of madder, each matured in copper vessels for two weeks before the wool was lowered. After clipping the rug spent four days in sun and a long mineral wash to settle the saturation into a register that reads as already lived with.

The composition

A beige field worked over with vine and palmette in tobacco, faded umber, and chalk. The repeat is wide enough that the eye does not catch the seam. The border is held to a single guard band in a slightly deeper register of the field colour. Faint horizontal abrash runs through the field as small bands of slightly different saturation, the trace of plant-dye work. The rug reads as a single warm wash from across the room and resolves into the slow vine on approach.

Conservation

Rotate the rug a half turn each spring and autumn. Vacuum weekly, beater bar off. Blot spills at once with clean cotton. Hand-wash by a trained wool conservator every six years. With this care the rug crosses a century.
