About 2.7 million hand-tied knots, around five months of bench time. The Ziegler pattern was the commercial breakthrough of the late Victorian carpet trade, designed by a Swiss firm operating out of Manchester who commissioned weavers to soften the dense Persian classical repeats into open, airy fields that fitted the new architectural scale of Anglo-American interiors. The pattern in front of you is a direct descendant of that lineage, reworked in a beige palette that opens the rug further.
Three to four weavers shared the loom for roughly five months. The pile is hand-spun New Zealand wool, finer and longer in staple than Indian or Chinese fibre, chosen because it takes vegetable dye to the depth a Ziegler palette demands without losing the slight irregularity that gives the wool its surface life. Madder root, indigo, oak gall, and walnut hull were prepared and matured in copper vats over two to three weeks before the wool was lowered. The Persian asymmetric knot is tied against a cotton foundation.
The composition
A soft beige ground carries an open allover floral repeat in faded indigo, walnut, and dried-rose tones. There is no central medallion. The composition is read as a single field rather than as a focal arrangement, which is what allows a Ziegler to sit gracefully under furniture without losing its pattern. The border is restrained, a single deep guard band in walnut. Over a decade the beige will warm, the rose will soften into salmon, and the indigo will deepen.
What you are buying
Antique Ziegler carpets with 1900-1920 attribution and intact field move through Christie's, Sotheby's, and Rippon Boswell in the range of $25,000 to $55,000 when they appear at auction. This piece is woven in the same tradition, on the same kind of loom, to the same density, in the same fibre. The rug appreciates with use rather than depreciating, the inversion of every other domestic purchase made in this price band.
The piece in a room
9' x 12' (274 x 366 cm) is the canonical drawing-room scale that the original Ziegler workshops were designed to fill. The rug expects an eight-to-ten-seat dining table or a full sectional and a pair of accent chairs above it. Pair with walnut or oak floors, walls in chalk or warm grey, brass fixtures, and upholstery in linen, oatmeal wool, or chestnut leather. The beige ground keeps the room luminous through the day.
Conservation
Rotate the rug a half turn each spring and autumn so light and footfall age the surface evenly. Vacuum weekly with the beater bar off. Blot spills with cool water and a clean cotton cloth. Hand wash by a wool-trained conservator every five to seven years. With this discipline the rug runs ninety to a hundred years.

Day-to-day care
- Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
- Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
- Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
- Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.
Deep cleaning
- Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
- Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
- For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.
Storage
- Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
- Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
- Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked
How long will shipping take?
Most metros (Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata) receive their order in 3-5 business days. Tier-2 cities take 5-7 business days, and remote pin codes (J&K, North-East, Andamans) take 7-10 business days. Use the pin-code checker above for a concrete delivery date.
Will the colour exactly match the photo?
Each carpet is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.
Can I get a sample before buying?
Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for ₹500 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp with the SKU and your shipping pin code to arrange a sample.
What is your returns process?
Returns are accepted within 7 days of delivery in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email care@rugsville.in or message us on WhatsApp with your order number — we arrange free reverse pickup in most pin codes. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.
Do you take custom orders?
Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted carpets typically take 4-8 weeks depending on size and complexity. Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.
Is Cash on Delivery (COD) available?
COD is available for most pin codes in zones A and B (metros and tier-2 cities). Some remote pin codes are prepaid only — the pin-code checker above will tell you immediately.
