Rugsville Ziegler Beige Wool Carpet 8' x 10'

New Zealand wool is the only fibre that takes the full Ziegler palette to the saturation the design needs without losing the slight irregularity that gives the wool its surface life. The fibre is longer than Indian or Chinese wool by roughly a third, which means the spinner can twist a finer yarn for the pile and the dyer can push deeper colour into the same surface area. The beige ground in this carpet is what the wool does naturally before any pigment is added, lifted only with a light walnut wash.

Two weavers shared the loom in India for around five months. Roughly 2.3 million Persian-asymmetric knots tied by hand on a cotton warp. The carpet was finished with three cold water washes after cutting, then laid in the sun for the dye to fix and the wool to lift. This three-wash protocol is the difference between a carpet that arrives with sheen and a carpet that arrives looking flat.

The composition

A soft beige ground carries floral and palmette work in deeper sand, faded indigo, and rose. The vine work runs corner to corner without a central medallion, which is the older Ziegler convention and what allows the carpet to work under furniture without losing its centre. The border holds a single vine band against a slightly darker beige guard. The palette deepens slightly with age as the wool oxidises.

The piece in a room

8' x 10' (244 x 305 cm) carries a three-seat sofa and two armchairs in a primary living room, or sits under a six-seat dining table. The beige ground reads against most wall colours but pulls warmest against limewashed cream, dusty rose, and pale sage. Wooden floors in oak, walnut, or teak provide the natural surround. Avoid placing the carpet on a high-contrast cool grey floor, where the warmth of the wool gets washed out.

Conservation

Rotate one half-turn every spring and autumn so light and traffic age the pile evenly. Vacuum weekly with suction only, never with the beater bar engaged. Blot any spill immediately with cold water and a clean cotton cloth. A professional wool wash by a trained conservator every five years lifts dust the vacuum cannot reach. The carpet will outlive its first owners.
