Rugsville Ziegler Beige Wool Carpet 8' x 10'

About 2.3 million hand-tied knots. Roughly five months of work on a vertical loom for two weavers in India. The carpet was built in the lineage of the 1880s Ziegler workshops, where European trading houses commissioned Persian weavers to draw down classical density and open the field for a Western audience. The pattern in this beige ground is a direct descendant of those drawings, simplified at the centre and edges so the vine work can breathe.

The wool is hand-spun and longer-staple than mill yarn, which is why the surface holds light differently from a uniformly machined pile. After the carpet came off the loom, it was sheared to relieve the pattern, washed three times in cold water, and laid out in the sun for the dye to set. The finishing wash is what gives the wool its sheen and its hand. Ziegler-tradition carpets without that wash feel and look entirely different.

The composition

A sandy beige field carries the soft floral repeat in deeper sand, ivory, and faded olive. The border holds a slim vine band against a darker beige guard. There is no central medallion, which is the older Ziegler convention and the reason this carpet works under furniture without losing its centre. Beige is the most forgiving ground colour in a Persian carpet because it accepts almost any wall colour above it. The wool will warm with age toward old ivory.

What you are buying

Western dealers list comparable hand-knotted Ziegler-tradition carpets at three to five times this price. The yarn, the loom, the knot count, and the wash protocol are the same. What changes between Indian and Western pricing is the retail margin and the cost of moving the carpet across two oceans. Buying in India removes those layers. The carpet retains value the way a hand-built piece of furniture does, and it appreciates with patina rather than depreciating.

8' x 10' (244 x 305 cm) carries a sofa, two armchairs, and a coffee table with the carpet visible at the edges. In a dining room it sits comfortably under a six-seater with the chairs fully on the pile when drawn out. The beige ground reads against most wall colours, but pulls warmest against terracotta, dusty rose, and sage. Wood furniture in walnut, teak, or oak finds its natural ground in this palette.

Conservation

Rotate one half-turn each spring and autumn. Vacuum weekly with suction only. The beater bar shortens the lifespan of any hand-knotted carpet, regardless of price. Blot spills immediately with cold water and a clean cotton cloth, never rub. A professional wool wash by a trained conservator every five years preserves both colour and pile.
