The composition

The composition centres on the beige field, with the drawing arranged so the eye moves rather than landing on a single point. Every element is sized to read at the scale of the room rather than the scale of the loom. Dye saturation moves slightly across the field, the way hand-spun yarn always does, and the variation reads as breath rather than as flaw. Each motif was hand-tied at the rate of a row a day, which means the rug carries the slow time of its making in a way no faster process can replicate. A hand-knotted wool ground does not stay still. Use, light, and time round the colour and deepen the saturation. The patina is part of the design, accruing slowly over the first ten years.
