The Ziegler tradition began as a commercial conversation between European drawing rooms and Persian master weavers, where the dense baroque repeats of Tabriz were thinned out so the eye could rest. A beige and rust palette was the most requested combination of the original 1880s commissions because rust grounds settle into mahogany and walnut interiors without dominating them. This rug works inside that lineage with a soft beige field and a long rust vine that opens and tightens as it travels.
Three to four weavers worked the vertical loom over roughly five and a half months. New Zealand wool was hand-spun for body, plied for tensile life, and dyed in small batches with madder root for the rust, walnut hull for the warm beige, and oak gall for the deeper outline tones. The wool was dipped, rinsed, and matured in copper vats before being lowered into the dye, and the finished pile was given a long sun-and-mineral wash that mellows the saturation by about two stops.
The composition
An open beige ground holding a continuous rust palmette repeat. The border is single and restrained. The rust is variegated in slow horizontal abrash bands, the natural fingerprint of small-batch dye work, where two hanks of wool from neighbouring vats sit side by side at slightly different saturations. Over the years the rust will deepen toward terracotta and the beige will warm toward ivory. The two colours stop competing and start cooperating around year three.
What you are buying
Antique Ziegler Sultanabads at 9' x 12' with comparable provenance carry estimates of forty to eighty thousand US dollars at the major auction houses when they appear at all. This is a new weaving in the same lineage, on the same kind of loom, to the same density, in the same fibre. At a fraction of the auction comparable, it appreciates with use rather than depreciating.
The piece in a room
9' x 12' (274 x 366 cm) accommodates a ten-seat dining table or a full sectional with the front legs of the upholstery resting on the wool. The rust ground holds against terracotta walls and chalk-white plaster equally well. The piece pairs with walnut casework, oxblood leather, and unframed canvas. Rooms with a clerestory or large windows benefit the dye depth.
Conservation
Rotate the rug end-for-end each spring and autumn so light and traffic do not concentrate in one zone. Vacuum weekly with the beater bar off. Blot spills with cotton at once, never rub. Schedule a hand-wash by a wool conservator at the five-year mark. Cared for this way, the rug runs ninety years in regular use.

Day-to-day care
- Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
- Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
- Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
- Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.
Deep cleaning
- Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
- Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
- For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.
Storage
- Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
- Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
- Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked
How long will shipping take?
Most metros (Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata) receive their order in 3-5 business days. Tier-2 cities take 5-7 business days, and remote pin codes (J&K, North-East, Andamans) take 7-10 business days. Use the pin-code checker above for a concrete delivery date.
Will the colour exactly match the photo?
Each carpet is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.
Can I get a sample before buying?
Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for ₹500 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp with the SKU and your shipping pin code to arrange a sample.
What is your returns process?
Returns are accepted within 7 days of delivery in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email care@rugsville.in or message us on WhatsApp with your order number — we arrange free reverse pickup in most pin codes. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.
Do you take custom orders?
Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted carpets typically take 4-8 weeks depending on size and complexity. Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.
Is Cash on Delivery (COD) available?
COD is available for most pin codes in zones A and B (metros and tier-2 cities). Some remote pin codes are prepaid only — the pin-code checker above will tell you immediately.
