Beige and rust together is one of the most resolved colour pairings in the Persian carpet tradition. The beige provides the structural ground, the rust carries the warmth, and the field reads at any light level without needing additional saturation to anchor it. The pairing was developed in the late nineteenth-century workshops where European trading firms asked Persian weavers to draw down the saturated classical palette into something an English library or drawing room could hold. This carpet is woven in India to that same colour discipline.

Two weavers shared the loom for around five months. Roughly 2.3 million Persian-asymmetric knots tied by hand on a cotton warp, with the wool hand-spun and dyed in small lots. The rust accents were struck from a madder root bath, the beige from a light walnut hull wash, and the ivory left as undyed wool with an alum mordant to set it against soiling. After cutting, the carpet was washed three times in cold water and laid in the sun for the dye to fix.

The composition

A beige ground carries the floral and vine repeat in rust, ivory, and faded olive. The central medallion sits at classical Ziegler proportions, with the corner pendants resolved into the field rather than walled off by the border line. The border holds a single vine band against a deeper beige guard. The contrast between the beige and rust will sharpen with age as the rust deepens into terracotta and the beige warms into bone. The carpet reads particularly well in lamplight.

Walnut and teak furniture sit naturally above this carpet, and brass or aged bronze metalwork provides the metallic counterpoint.

Conservation

Rotate one half-turn each spring and autumn so the pile wears evenly. Vacuum weekly with suction only, beater bar disengaged. Blot any spill within the first thirty minutes using cold water and a clean cotton cloth. Professional wool wash by a trained conservator every five years lifts dust the household vacuum cannot reach. The carpet outlives its first room with this routine.
