The original Ziegler looms ran from the 1880s through the 1920s in the small towns around Sultanabad, and the carpets they produced now hang in the V&A and trade through Sotheby's at four-figure dollar prices when they appear. The weave continues today in Indian workshops working from the original cartoons and recipes. What you are looking at is the contemporary chapter of that tradition.

2 weavers shared the loom for 5 months. The hand-spun wool was tied knot by knot against a vertical beam, the pattern read off a cartoon set behind the warp. Plant dyes were prepared in copper vats over four to six weeks of slow extraction before the wool was lowered. The piece is offered at 6' x 9' (183 × 274 cm) in a beige and rust register, made in India.

The composition

The palette is built around beige and rust. Colour interaction does the work. The two main values sit at a calculated distance, neither flat nor competing, and the third tone in the border closes the conversation with a quiet final note. The pile reflects light differently along its length and across it, so the field shifts slightly as you walk past, the small movement that distinguishes wool from print. Pairs well with linen, leather, walnut, and oak. Pairs less well with strongly patterned upholstery, where the rug expects to be the dominant graphic element in the room.
