Rugsville Ziegler Beige Rust Wool Carpet 8' x 10'

The Ziegler design is the name of a commercial commission rather than a place. In 1883 a German firm based in Manchester, Ziegler and Co., set up a buying office in western Persia and asked weavers to soften the dense classical floral repeats into open, airy compositions for the Anglo-American market. The pattern in front of you descends from those late nineteenth-century commissions and remains, more than a century later, the most-requested classical design at scale.

Three weavers shared this 8' x 10' (244 x 305 cm) loom in India for about five months. The pile is hand-spun wool on a cotton foundation, knotted by feel against a vertical beam, the design read from a memorised cartoon. After weaving the rug was washed for lustre and lightly clipped to even the pile. The vegetable-mordanted dyes were prepared in copper vats over multiple weeks before the wool was lowered.

The composition

A beige field carries an open allover floral repeat in rust and softer earth tones, with a single restrained border in a deeper shade. The Ziegler discipline is restraint; the vines breathe rather than crowding. Over the first decade the rust will lighten slightly toward an honeyed terracotta, the beige will warm into bone, and the overall palette will gain the patina that makes antique Zieglers desirable on the auction market.

Antique Ziegler carpets at this size, when they appear at Christie's or Sotheby's, sell at $20,000 to $50,000 depending on condition and provenance. This is a new weaving in the same lineage, on the same kind of loom, in the same fibre. A hand-knotted Ziegler appreciates with use rather than depreciating; the patina is the asset.

The piece in a room

8' x 10' (244 x 305 cm) is the working drawing-room scale. A six-seat dining table sits with margin all around, or a three-seat sofa with paired armchairs. The beige and rust palette pairs with mid-tone walls, with walnut and oak floors, with leather and linen upholstery. The rug holds direct sunlight well; UV restores some of the tonal depth that interior light slowly washes out.

Conservation

Rotate a half turn each spring and autumn. Vacuum weekly with the beater bar off. Blot spills with a clean cotton cloth, working from the outside in. Hand-wash by a wool conservator every five to seven years. With this care the rug runs eighty to a hundred years.
